(DT at their best- these 3 are interchangeable)
Images and Words
Scenes From A Memory
Awake
-----
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
A Dramatic Turn of Events
Falling Into Infinity
When Dream and Day Unite
-----
(The steady decline beginning with ToT in 2003)
Octavarium
Train of Thought
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds and Silver Linings

BC&SL is their weakest album with the least amount of replay-ability for me. Aside from The Count of Tuscany, every song felt lacking (while all containing some great elements). What hurts even more, is that A Nightmare to Remember could have been a DT classic, but was horribly blemished by the infamous Portnoy-core section.

Scenes From a Memory

Octavarium
Train of Thought
---
Awake
A Dramatic Turn of Events
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds and Silver Linings
---
When Dream And Day Unite
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Just curious, but for those of you that rank Octavarium so low, what exactly is it about the album that you don't like?

I find it very inconsistent. The highs (Octavarium, TROAE, These Walls) are very high, but the lows (I Walk Beside You, Never Enough, The Answer Lies Within) to be some of the lowest of DT's discography.

I always considered The Answer Lies Within to be one of the highs of the album. But then, I think Octavarium is a pretty awesome album, at least in terms of being extremely well rounded for people who like heavy stuff, ballads, progressive stuff, etc. I think there's something on 8V to please every type of DT fan. But I do think that The Answer Lies Within is one of its better songs, at least for having that wonderful Piano melody. One of a handful of DT's best piano melodies since KM left the band.

Just curious, but for those of you that rank Octavarium so low, what exactly is it about the album that you don't like?

I don't dislike it, but I still consider it one of their two least best albums, and for this simple reason: I almost never have the urge to listen to it.  How much I love an album is largely dictated by how often I listen to it, and Octavarium and Systematic Chaos, both of which I liked a lot when they first came out, are by far the two DT albums I listen to the least.

Back to just OV, the title track is great - probably one of my 25 or 30 favorite DT songs - but everything else I can take or leave.  Don't get me wrong, I like I Walk Beside You, Panic Attack, The Answer Lies Within and The Root of All Evil, but if I didn't hear any of them ever again, I probably wouldn't care that much.  As for the rest, Never Enough is very forgettable (since the only thing about it that I like is the riff, and I can get that by listening to the Muse song it originally came from), These Walls is super boring, and Sacrificed Sons is easily the band's most boring and most forgettable 10-minute plus song ever.

So, there ya go.

It's a good album, but simply cannot compete against the majority of DT albums. The only song I dislike is I Walk Beside You.

Haven't yet listened to it, and wasn't actually planning to bother, until I saw the praise it garnered here. Might pick it up in a couple weeks.

It is worth of listening. I'd say 40% of the active DTF members don't like it, but some people love it (like I do). But you'll never know, is it your new favourite DT album (very small possibility  :lol), if you don't give it a spin.

Don't believe I ever did this in this thread, but if I did, time to RE-RANK.

1. SFAM.
2. I&W
3. ADTOE
4. Awake
5. SDOIT
6. ToT
7. FII
8. Octavarium
9. SC
10. BC&SL

No, I didn't arrange my list so Octavarium was 8th, it honestly just happened this time. And since 6-8 flip flop around a lot, it may not happen again.
