What a bizarre ranking.

So...any opinion that differs from yours is "bizarre"?

Anyway...

Surprisingly, it doesn't look like I've previously posted in this thread, although I know I've posted a ranking before.

Here's where I come out"

Top Tier - On any given day, the order may vary a bit, but these are pretty much always the top three.
1. Scenes From A Memory - Pretty much a flawless album with a strong concept and exceptional performances from all five band members.
2. Images & Words - The album that started it all.  Everything that I was looking for at a time when many of my favorite bands were letting me down.
3. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence - Disc two was exceptional from day 1.  Took me a while to get into disc one, but the first three songs are exceptional.  Last two songs on disc one are weak.

Not Quite Top Tier - Mostly great stuff but some glaring flaws keep these albums out of the top tier.
4. Awake - Similar comments to those regarding SDOIT.  There's nothing as bad as TGD here, but there's also nothing as exceptional as the song SDOIT.  The Mirror, Innocence Faded and Lie drag it down.
5. Train Of Thought - The uber-metal focus was a bit jarring, but it's mostly strong.  I tend to skip TDS and HYF.  SOC is the band's best instrumental.

Hit and Miss Tier - Exactly what the name implies
6. Octavarium - TALW, Panic Attack, Sacrificed Sons and the title track are all great songs (although the title track is weighed down by the Continuum intro).  The rest is ok, and IWBY is weak.
7. Dream Theater - I have a tough time with DT12 and ADTOE.  BAI is the best song the band has done since 8VM, but DT12 is a bit more consistent.  For whatever reason, STR, BTV and TBP all seem to blend together for me.  I never actively seek out The Enemy Inside, but whenever I hear it, I like it a lot.  Enigma Machine is probably my least favorite DT instrumental.
8. A Dramatic Turn Of Events - As mentioned above, BAI is my favorite song of the last decade and a half, and Outcry and BITS are really good, but it's a pretty big fall off from there.
9. Distance Over Time - I have nothing negative to say about it (except that FITL and Paralyzed are a bit too similar), but it's never really grabbed me.
10. When Dream and Day Unite - Really hard to compare to every other album for obvious reasons.  TOWHTSTS is pretty weak, but I don't dislike it.  I think if I had heard it before hearing I&W, I might rank it higher.

More Miss Than Hit
11. Black Clouds & Silver Linings - I usually only listen to Wither and TCOT.
12. Systematic Chaos - Such a disappointing album.  Repentance is DT's single worst song, ITPOE is uninteresting, and most of the rest is just "meh."  Constant Motion is the best track.
13. Falling Into Infinity - I've written ad nauseum about this album.  A handful of pretty good songs and a lot of mundane stuff (and NM, DT's second or third worst song).

***massive gaping chasm***

14. The Astonishing - I kept trying and trying and trying, but nope.  There's one song that kinda sounds like the Dixie Dregs that I liked, but it's not worth the effort to find it.  "A" for effort.

The song Disappear, the most genuinely emotional DT song ever, is not weak.

I think that title goes to Vacant when you read what James’ lyrics are about. But I agree, I love Disappear.

What a bizarre ranking.

No offense but, with Images and Words at #10, your ranking is way more bizarre.

Top Tier DT:
Awake
Images
Scenes

Second Tier DT:
Six Degrees
Octavarium
Dramatic Turn
ToT

And
...the rest; all decent and listenable but usually only 2 or 3 (tops) standout songs mixed in with songs I could take or leave.

Worst: Probably Astonishing- some good ideas but they needed someone in the room to tell them “no”
Most Underrated: Black Clouds- actually fairly consistent with some gems, not as bad as its reputation
Most Overrated: D/T- Barstool Warrior and At Wits End are the only songs with any replay value for me and even they are fairly unremarkable, honestly.

I may not love Images and Words as much as most - but at least I don't bring up how much i dislike every chance I get

Unlike some people with the Astonishing ( no names - just in general ).

Yeah...an album ranking thread is a terribly bizarre place to express an opinion about an album.

Ranked and Tiered, as of today

LOVE THESE ALBUMS WITHOUT QUESTION
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
When Dream And Day Unite
Dream Theater
Images & Words
Octavarium

THESE ARE ONES THAT I REALIZE ARE BETTER THAN I THINK ONCE I LISTEN TO THEM
Distance Over Time
Scenes From A Memory
Systematic Chaos
The Astonishing
Awake
Train Of Thought

THESE ONES ARE GOOD, BUT HAVE MULTIPLE "MEH" TRACKS
Falling Into Infinity
Black Clouds & Silver Linings
A Dramatic Turn of Events
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

My personal regular rotation now:

Distance Over Time
Awake
Dream Theater

And then I have my curated playlists to listen to songs outside those three.

Of course this is a hard thing to do, because it changes regularly, so therefore I'll not rank them in a classic order from 1 to 14...

Top of all, at all times they will remain my favorite;

Black Clouds & Silver Linings / Train of Thought / A Dramatic Turn of Events

Close to the top, just underneath it;

Awake / Scenes from a Memory / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence / Dream Theater 12

Remaing in my top 10;

When Dream and Day Unite / A Change of Seasons (althought it is an EP) / Octavarium / Systematic Chaos

Last but never least;

Images and Words / Falling into Infinity / The Astonishing / Distance over Time

Wim pointed out something I don't see mentioned very often...

Sure it's been a while

----------------

Awake (close to perfect)
I&W (magic)

FII (Weak tracks but good ones are so strong)
Scenes (hard to enjoy on per song basis)
DT12 (painfully underrated)

D/T (Just a bit more consistent but...)
ADTOE (...both are good)

8vm (TROAE, TW, and 8vm are so strong)
6DOIT (I guess I prefer TGP, BF, and Disappear to...)
SC (...ITPOE Pt1., Forsaken, Repentance, and TMOLS)

ToT (Both of these albums...)
BCSL (...needed more time in the oven)

TA (tried to be too many things)
WDADU (With LaBrie this is upper half. Great songs)
Take a chance you may die
Over and over again

Ok, I'll do my first ranking here:

1. Images & Words (first album I heard from DT in 1992, still my favorite)
2. Awake (first album bought as a - huge - fan, different from I&W, almost as good in my book)
3. When Dream and Day Unite (yes, this gets the bronze!)

4. Falling into Infinity (yes, some duds in here, but the highs are really high for me. So many neat ideas in here...)
5. Train of Thought (always enjoyed this a lot)
6. Scenes from a Memory (great accomplishment for DT, and glad it put them back on track as a band - I just don't quite find it to be as much of a "classic" as many do)
7. DT12 (my favorite of the MM era. Plenty to enjoy here, and I like some of the more explicit Rush influence popping up here and there)

I'd say 1-7 are pretty well established, as of now...the next few are in a generally lower tier, and I don't have particularly strong feelings about the order. Today it would go like this:

8. Octavarium
9. Six Degrees
10. Distance over Time
11. A Dramatic Turn of Events
12. The Astonishing

As I mentioned elsewhere in the D/T thread, ADTOE could be higher, and I guess it is on certain days...LOVE Breaking All Illusions, and I always thought it was a great "comeback". It just lacks some wow factor as it tries a bit too hard to revisit certain sounds and structures without (IMO) the same well-honed songcraft. I actually like The Astonishing, but I don't go back to it very often (and, yes, some moments do get a little too "Disney" for me  ;)). But, really, all of these are pretty great albums.

The bottom two:
13. Systematic Chaos
14. Black Clouds & Silver Linings

I listened to and enjoyed SC a fair bit when it came out...I don't enjoy it quite as much now. BC&SL has some good moments (TCOT, in particular, is a great one), but I guess it sort of marked a low point in my DT "story". Still good albums, though!

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - the title track is definitely one of my top favorites, and every song on the first disc is golden

2. Octavarium - again, the title track here does it for me, as well as "Panic Attack" and "The Root of All Evil" (I'm also very partial to "I Walk Beside You")

3. Images And Words - it just had to be up here in the top 3!

4. Awake - in recent months, I have come to love this album EVEN MORE, and it's just structured and composed so well!

5. Scenes From A Memory - I love concept albums, and this is no exception! Gotta give props to ALL of Act 2 - "Home", "The Dance of Eternity", "One Last Time", "The Spirit Carries On" and "Finally Free"...just an amazing sequence of songs!

6. Train of Thought - like Awake, I have recently come to appreciate this album. It's just pretty good for what it is!

7. Falling Into Infinity - the great songs on here make up for the not-so-great songs, and it balances out pretty well!

8. Systematic Chaos - "In The Presence of Enemies", "The Ministry of Lost Souls" and "Repentance"... I probably could live without the rest, but they're good songs too... I just enjoy those three a lot more.

9. When Dream And Day Unite - my least listened to album (mostly due to production and CD's voice) - I listen to WDADR more often... a LOT... Besides, "The Killing Hand" on WDADR is just killer.

-Marc.

So it's been over 12 years since I last posted in this thread, and it's hard to believe this same exact thread is still going. Portnoy was still in the band when I was last here! :lol Let's see if my ranking has changed very much...

1. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
2. Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory
3. Octavarium
4. Images And Words
5. Awake
6. Black Clouds & Silver Linings
7. Train Of Thought
8. A Dramatic Turn Of Events
9. Systematic Chaos
10. Distance Over Time
11. Dream Theater
12. Falling Into Infinity
13. When Dream And Day Unite
14. The Astonishing

This took a bit of time to think about, though I'm only certain that the top 5 remain my top 5, even if their places swap around between 2nd and 5th places. The bottom four will likely always be my bottom four. And sixth-tenth places are the middle ground albums, each one has some great songs, some good songs, and some merely OK songs, but I would prefer any of those over the bottom four.

-Marc.

With the new album fully appreciated I think i can do this:

1.   Scenes From a Memory  100%
2.   Images and Words           96%
3.   Awake                             93%
4.   Octavarium                     90%
5.   Six Degrees                     89%
6.   A View                            87%
7.   SC.                                 85%
8.   Dramatic Turn.                 84%
9.   Black Clouds                    83%
10.   Train Of Thought              79%
11.   Distance Over Time          78%
12.   DT12                               72%
13.   TA.                                  71%
14.   Falling Into Infinity            65%
15.   Dream and Day                 60%

Always rethinking the bottom after DOT. I can never make up my mind about TA.
She can turn a drop of water
         Into an ocean
In the room the women come and go
                                                 Talking of Michelangelo.

It's still a little early but I'm quite confident "A View" will be either #5 or #6 for me.  SMALL chance it dethrones Awake at #4 but unlikely.   I'm still torn on which one is better between DoT and a View but both are really good albums.  The highs are higher on DoT but all 7 songs on a View are very good.

SFAM
I&W
SDOIT

Awake
A View

The production just kills it for me and for whatever reason it's the one album that just doesn't stick with me.  I do like Breaking All Illusions but thats the only song I actively seek out to listen to.   I liked it when it first came out but it did not stand the test of time.   It's not a bad album, DT doesn't have any of those, its just my least favorite of 15.
