Secretly Excellent Songs
« on: December 19, 2012, 09:09:21 PM »

Some songs are great and are widely considered great.  Stairway to Heaven, Bohemiam Rhapsody, and so on.  Some songs aren't considered great by the population as a whole, but earn their due respect from their audience.  A Change of Seasons, 2112 by Rush, and so on.

Some songs unfortunately are great but aren't widely respected.  This thread is for those songs.

My addition:

Linkin Park - Session
I'm not sure how much of a secret this song is, but its respect level is out of proportion to its quality.  I've never heard another song even remotely like it, even by Linkin Park.  The drums combine both granular synthesis/stutter beats and booming size, which should be impossible.  The synth tones are dark and moody, without being over emotional relative to the purpose of the song.  And that scratch solo.  Awesome.  It's a shame DJ Hahn doesn't do much DJing in Linkin Park anymore, because he was awesome.

This song isn't one of the greatest ever, but it basically came and went from the public consciousness, which isn't fair.
Take a chance you may die
Over and over again

Avenged Sevenfold - Natural born killer  :rollin :rollin :rollin

Maybe there would be better examples, but Idk, just told a friend today that I'm secretly listening to the two latest A7X releases because they contain really great songs, like NBK, Welcome to the family, Critical acclaim,..... I just can't resist those riffs and vocals, however this band seems just like an MTV product to me......

listen to Sidewinder and I Won't See You Tonight pt. 1

anyways, Of Monsters and Men's Slow and Steady is usually ignored in spite of the other faster tracks on their debut, but it's one of the best songs they've written. I'd also say the same about Thrice's The Whaler-- maybe not here, but on most websites, Digital Sea gets the most favor of all the Water tracks.

Listened to the first two mentioned, Sidewinder is (except for the "Spanish guitar end" a really good one, IWSYT pt.1 is a dramatic and very good song.
Maybe they're emphasizing tracks from the latest releases more so the ones you mentioned don't get much attention. However, I'll check out their early albums ASAP  :tup

I don't think such a mainstream popular song belongs in this thread.

This, or maybe really deep cuts from albums that are kinda passed over, I'll post two:

dredg - Lechium - From the first album, what a powerful song and build up.

Fair To Midland - Quince - Everyone talks about Fables and A&A and while IFS was sort of the demo to Fables it had "Quince" on it which is my eyes is a top 5 song of theirs. A different feel from most of their songs.

I love that song. The whole first album gets overlook far too often.

I would list all of these as hidden gems. Although they may be known with-in their respective fan bases, none of them were ever singles.

Rush- Losing it
Blind Melon- mouth full of cavities
Dave Matthews band- The dreaming tree
Fate's Warning- The road goes on forever
Queensryche- The killing words
Smashing Pumpkins- To Forgive

For some reason, I thought that it wasn't very well received because it's far out of their style.

Dave Matthews band- The dreaming tree

I used to always skip that song but a while back I had the cd playing in the background and The Dreaming Tree came on, it's an incredible song, great chorus. It's now one of my favorites.

Thrice- Song for Milly Michaelson

I don't think this song is necessarily, 'secret', but I've rarely heard it any discussions as one of the best Thrice songs, or one of the best from TAI for that matter. Maybe I just haven't been listening in the right places, but this song really was the first Thrice tune that pulled me in.

Wonderful choice, I love this song so very much; and yes it isn't discussed enough.

Floyd had some great mentions as well with Opeth and Alice In Chains. Mine contribution will be...

Butthole Surfers - Pepper

Definitely not a secret to the rest of the world, but I've never seen them even mentioned on this forum, so perhaps around here it may be considered as such. I heard this song on my friends playlist the other day and remembered how much I love it. Really groovy, odd song; love the way he speaks throughout and the..er...'placement'(?) of the lyrics.

Trying to think of others but coming up blank..hrrmmm..

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

Dude! Great track. I still remember their music being used in an SNES commercial in summer '94 that was the first commercial to show screenshots of their MK II port. I could've dented the side of a mountain with the hardon I got after seeing that commercial for the first time. I also remember Pepper being one of the first new songs to be on the radio when 106.7 The End debuted and carried the torch for where 106.1 The Zephyr had left off thus insuring that NOLA would have a legitimate rock radio station. I miss that station.
