Recommend me some music
« on: December 17, 2012, 04:38:11 PM »
I asked you a few times before many years ago to recommend me some music, I always successfully took some great bands from your recommendations so first of all thank you all very much :) But now I'd like to ask you once again. I'm getting kind of burnt out of prog and metal in general, especially generic and flat (in terms of tone and color) sound of guitar/bass/drums. I still enjoy everything that has that kind of sound and I already know it and love it but I don't feel any need to listen anything new with that kind of sound.

So here's what I love in no particular order: Dream Theater, Pain Of Salvation, Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree, Muse, Shadow Gallery, Depeche Mode, Radiohead, Transatlantic, Gotye, Rush, Pink Floyd, Opeth, Marillion, Lunatic Soul, Blackfield, Storm Corrosion, Flying Colors

Here's a list of bands that I love only few albums from or I don't love them as much as bands above: The Mars Volta, Elbow, Metallica, King Crimson, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Massive Attack, Linkin Park, Spock's Beard, Rammstein

But the most important thing is probably this. The list of songs that really move me and I really, really enjoyed listening to during last few weeks:
Muse - Panic Station
Muse - The 2nd Law - Unsustainable
Muse - Explorers
Muse - Undisclosed Desires
Muse - I Belong To You
Muse - Starlight
Muse - Knights Of Cydonia
Rush - Lock And Key
Rush - Turn The Page
Rush - Carnies
Rush - Wish Them Well
Steven Wilson - Luminol
Pain Of Salvation - Imago (Homines Partus)
Pain Of Salvation - Disco Queen
Pain Of Salvation - Flame To The Moth
Pain Of Salvation - Tell Me You Don't Know
Pain Of Salvation - Conditioned
Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon
Dream Theater - Wait For Sleep
Dream Theater - Learning To Live
Marillion - Trap The Spark
Marillion - The Fruit Of The Wild Rose

But also for example this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74LXx0wSqMI
Don't care about the video just the music :D I discovered this just very recently and I can't get enough of it, especially pf how happy and upbeat is the chorus and then at the end it changes the key and creates a lot of awesome tension. And also the verses are awesome and everything.

Overall I feel that what I seek for is more upbeat music which has a nice tension here and there. Also I really love electronic weird noises that are not stupid and random but makes me really feel something... Like in Unsustainable, that's not some flat dubstep, that's simply awesomeness. But also like in many many Steven Wilson songs and so on...

So thank you for your recommendations, I'm looking forward to them :)

How about guitar, drums, and cello instead?

Grayceon - Shellmounds

Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

You didn't say anything about Devin Townsend so here's him too. He's made albums with anything from metal to poppy rock stuff to ambient, so there's a ton of variety.

Devin Townsend - Kingdom

Also you mentioned liking Gotye, have you heard anything from Kimbra (the girl featured on Somebody That I Used to Know)? She is completely amazing and writes some of the best pop music I've ever heard. Really catchy, great lyrics, fantastic jazzy vibe.

General advice: create a profile on last.fm, let the scrobbler check your listening history and it'll spit out recommendations. I've found dozens of new and interesting bands.....

You might like Radiohead. Try Paranoid Android and Pyramid Song to start. Maybe No Surprises if you want something happier and poppier. Radiohead tends to make great use of time signatures.

You might like Queenryche's Operation Mindcrime. It's almost like a cousin of Scenes From a Memory.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. hmm, I think we have really similar music taste right now (I'm speaking about the OP) so I can identify with you really well!

I could recommend a few albums:
Leprous - Bilateral
Ozric Tentacles - Paper Monkeys
Pendulum - Immersion (everybody has heard this...)
Frost* - Milliontown (especially Black Light Machine from the second guitar solo to finish)
Some RHCP as well could work well...

Hope you will like at least one of them :)
Do you even whahíbrido pickingant?

I'll second this.
