Round 5 Results!PuffyPat: The White Stripes – Black Math
I probably should have put this band on my not-to-send list, but I forgot because I don’t own any of their stuff (I’ve heard most of it however) and there’s a reason I don’t own their albums. I don’t like this band. It probably has something to do with a) the incredible simplicity of the drums and guitar and b) Jack White’s voice. Their music is actually too simple for me to stay interested in it. Plus, the production on this album is horrible (a minor gripe I suppose). So obviously I didn’t like this song. It’s not really your fault, you just happened to send me a band I detest that I forgot to put on my list. So I suppose it’s my fault. Sorry, and better luck next round.

Crazyaga: Boards of Canada – Turquoise Hexagon Sun
There isn’t a lot to say about this one at all. This was a really chill electronic piece that hardly had anything going on - and I have to admit it was kind of a reprieve from what I usually listen to. It was very relaxing, but I wouldn’t listen to this all the time. Mr. Fox here told me not to listen to it as background music, and I tried not to, but it automatically faded into the background when I listened to it. But I enjoyed it for what it was.

YtseBitsySpider: Memphis May Fire – Red in Tooth & Claw
This is pure modern metalcore. Not really on the technical side, it was basically metalcore with pop sensabilities (in the vocal melodies mostly). It also had some pretty awesome djent-style riffing. I did like this song, but it seemed like generic modern metalcore. I do enjoy this genre somewhat though, and this song was pretty good. My favorite part was the ritard at the end and the djent-y breakdown. Cool song, but not that memorable.

Lolzeez: Camel – Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider
More classic prog. I freaking love Tolkien’s books, and this song was a pretty cool homage to his work. Again, this isn’t a genre I listen to very much at all because I’ve moved past it, but it’s nice to hear it sometimes. Some cool synth work on this one, and the vocals were cool. Kind of boring with the length and all, but it was a cool song anyway.

Nekov: Frost* - Black Light Machine
Silly me. I thought Frost* was an instrumental band.
Anyway, the vocal intro to this song was really cool and I liked the electronic stuff thrown in in a pinch. I was kinda iffy on the electronic part that seemed to go on for a long time until a really awesome lead guitar came in and relieved my imminent boredom. Then the drums did a really sick fill, cut out and the song was left with just the lead. This was my favorite part of the whole song. However the whole piece was very synthetic sounding, one of the last parts being all electronic synth stuff. I usually don’t like that in songs, but this part was really cool. All in all, great submission

Scorpion: Redemption – Black and White World
I liked this one. A nice, cold-sounding piece of prog metal. You could’ve sent this one for the winter round and gotten full theme marks. The piano intro was really awesome and some of the rhythms they used were really awesome and messed with my heard. Unfortunately, the singer is singing in that typical prog metal style of operatic vocals, something that I don’t like about the genre. However, on this song, it wasn’t as bad as some bands can be in that area. Great stuff.

Elite: Seventh Wonder – The Black Parade
More prog metal. It was seemed heavier than the song Scorpion sent me, but maybe that was the audio quality. Anyway, I liked this fine. It was complicated enough so that I didn’t get bored of it, and I really liked the vocal melodies. However, like I said in Scorp’s writeup, it had that prog metal vocal style, which gets on my nerves a lot, but again, this band isn’t as bad about it as some are. Great song, I liked it I lot.

Heretic: Right Away Great Captain! – Devil Dressed in Blue
This was so different from the other submissions, and it was awesome. It was completely acoustic and it was one guy doing everything. I loved the lyrics. It sounds a ton like Neutral Milk Hotel on their album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, especially the vocal style. I loved that. I will definitely be checking out more of his stuff.

This round was nowhere near as good as previous rounds, but that may have been partially my fault because of the theme I picked. Better luck next round.
Due to the songs not really being judge-able on theme points this round (you either got the points or you didn't), next round with a theme like this the songs will be judged purely on song quality.
The standings:
Heretic: 45
Nekov: 42.5
Scorpion: 42.5
Elite: 41
PuffyPat 34.5
Crazyaga: 33
YtseBitsySpider: 29.5
Lolzeez: 28.5
Nekov and Scorpion are tied! WHO'S GOING PULL AHEAD NEXT ROUND!?!?! Exciting!
Next round's theme will be
Acoustic.
Send me a song without electric instruments. Deadline will be Sunday at 23:59 eastern time....
And I will take away two points from your score if you send it in late! It's quite annoying when that happens.
