opinions on the album DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
« on: December 14, 2012, 03:10:46 PM »
well as you might know, this album was fully made of samples. at first I thought that he actually changed the samples and stuff like that.. but the things is, he really didnt.
example:
this song by DJ shadow:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32X-ieCav-M

is basically the beggining and 2:09 of this song looped:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgUN_7si84M

the drums of this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ico0mgNEiC4

and the middle of his song, is the guitar from the beggining of this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fN8RdQDfXc

and just hints from other 3 songs that he putted in.

should we really give him much credit for that song he made?
I love beautiful things.

Uhm.  Yes he should get credit.
It's not as simple as splicing parts together.

idk. some part of me wants to give him credit but.... I feel a bit uncomfortable with the fact he havent actually changed that much the samples. he just looped parts from other songs, basically. idk!

I listened to that album before and remember liking it. Didn't know it was based on samples.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

I think that it takes an amazing amount of skill to determine which sample fits in which place and to make such captivating music with them, it's probably harder than making music the conventional way. I think he deserves all the credit he gets. :tup

Thats what I thought he did until I actually heard the songs he sampled from.
He havent actually fitted the samples into place like a puzzle with alot of parts.....
he basically just looped a part from one song with drums of a diffrent one!!!!

But that's not even close to all that he does with the song.

yes it is! he just did this:
first 3 minutes: part from song X looped + drums of song Y looped + sound effects taken from songs ABC
other 3 minutes: part from song Z looped +drums of song Y looped +  sound effects taken from songs ABC

and thats it.
the whole thing is made from 6 songs, that 3 of them are just minor parts.

He chops apart others songs and splices them together to create an atmosphere that the songs he samples did not carry. Of course he deserves credit. It's his creation. When everything comes together I do find it feels quite different then it did previously.

Just to be clear - I think that Endtroducing is an incredible album.
The question was about if DJshadow really deserve the credit for it

And this is a perfect answer to that question.

Ok. So he deserves credit for the arrangement but not the actual music.

Of course he does, he's just using this stuff to create something completely new. While he indeed hasn't 'composed' any of the seperate parts he uses, the way his songs are arrangement definitely makes them, like LieLow said, vastly different songs. So, yes, he composed all of those tracks and he should be credited for the music on those tracks as well, because not a single track is like anything he used to sample from.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.
