RESULTS – ROUND 5 (EXPERIMENTAL)Heretic: Suspicious Waveforms – Thank You Scientist
Rich 3.0 + Other 2.5 = 5.5This is ridiculously groovy! Very nice fusion of jazz, funk, folk (particularly with the violins) and rock. The band are very talented, they play very tightly and with some real swagger. Fit the theme of the round very nicely as well – not totally wacky but nicely unique and not really something I’ve heard before. Enjoyed it a lot!
Some pretty technical acid jazz (or similar). I like the comments calling this jazz-fusion - just because it got forced into a structured rhythm half-way through doesn't mean it "fused" with anything. Although they should have let the axeman loose earlier in the song. Nonetheless, I liked it, it was pretty good, even if not really my cup of tea.Marvellous G: Jai Paul – Jasmine
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5Interesting song. I like the down-tempo vibe, and the mix of sounds, but it’s a bit hard to grasp much in it, even after a couple of listens. I’m used to “glitch” sounds in electronic music, but this song has little pauses and similar that actually sound like a CD skipping, which is a little off-putting. Points for experimentation though, I can’t think of much else I’ve heard that’s anything like this.
Well, we asked for experimental, and that was pretty out there. Not much else to say really. It was music.kingshmegland: Primus – Tommy the Cat
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.5 = 5.0What is this I don’t even. The overall vibe is very 90s, a la Faith No More or early Chili Peppers. But this is quite a lot more bonkers! First listen just confused me, but on second listen it was quite enjoyable. Awesome bass playing, and the stuff in the second half where the vocals become more rhythmic is really funky.
I actually owned this disc at one point, good stuff. Nothing else to say here. Good submission.lonestar: The Mercury Tree – Pterodactyls
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0Hmm, this was fairly unusual I suppose, and there are definitely some cool ideas in it. But on the whole it didn’t really grab me very much, there wasn’t much that made me want to keep listening. And to be honest, it rather outstayed its welcome.
Kind of a punky type song, To be honest, I tuned out about 2 minutes in or so. But it was unusual and fit the round theme, so kudos for that.
Zantera: Mr.Bungle – Ars Moriendi
Rich 2.5 + Other 2.0 = 4.5Ok, so this song pretty much killed my brain. Absolutely no doubt that this is experimental, so I have to give some points for that. And bits of it are really quite enjoyable, Mike Patton has such a great humour with his music. On the whole though, it’s just a bit too batshit insane for me.
My first Mr.Bungle song ever. Well, there's so much going on it's hard to grab any one part and say "I liked that" or "that even". It's like a scary birthday party gone wrong. But it's what we asked for so, more kudos.
Ultimetalhead: Sigh – Sunset Song
Rich 2.5 + Other 3.0 = 5.5This song is just bizarre. I’ve no idea whether this is normal for Sigh, but the song seems to shift genre every 20 seconds, between classic rock, black metal, lounge jazz, thrash, 80s metal… and that’s just my description of the first two minutes. It’s hard to really get into though, and as you know I’ve nothing against harsh vocals but this guy doesn’t really do it for me. I was going to award 2 points, but the random dance section around 4 minutes won me over.
Not sure why, not sure how, but this one worked better for me than others. Oh, it was just as out there, but I digged it (dug it?).jingle.boy: Amaranthe – Call Out My Name
Rich 2.0 + Other 2.0 = 4.0Mm, not sure this is particularly experimental, sounds like a lot of the growls + female vocals bands out there. It’s not bad, quite fun at times, and I actually really like the female singer’s voice. But the male singer is bland, and to be honest the growler is kind of annoying. The chorus is kinda catchy, but other than that the song doesn’t do much for me.
Ok, bit of a fail on the round theme, at least compared to the others. It’s power metal with some growls thrown in. I mean, I liked it, it was interesting, catchy and upbeat but not really very experimental. Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers – Bring Out the Snakes
Rich 3.5 + Other 3.5 = 7.0Ok, this song is really, really good! I really didn’t know what to expect from all the sound clips in the first minute or two, but when the song gets going it’s very good modern prog, and then the song just grows. They’ve got a great and pretty unique sound, and the song is very… I want to say surprising. In a good way. On my first listen it took me to places I didn’t expect but that I really enjoyed. Great stuff!
I don't know WHAT the hell that was, but it was some pretty cool shit.Gorille:

It’s all still to play for! There are
two rounds left of the “group stage”. After this the top 4 will progress to the semi-finals. The rest of you WILL BE DESTROYED. But it’s very close now, with Nekov making a sudden surge and lonestar dropping a couple of places. Really, with two rounds left everyone has the potential to make the finals…
Round 6 – 2012So, the world went and defied all expectations last year and didn’t end in December. As such, we are able to sit here in 2013 and celebrate the music from the last year. Send us something new from 2012 (i.e. no covers, live versions or re-recordings. New songs only!).
