I don't know what's holding them back, has anyone read something?

Serj has only said " when the time is right."

I have seen this before though - Bands all give different answers about making a new album and say they're putting it off etc etc . .

But they've secretly been working on it then they all just announce it.

Can we lock this thread and only reopen it when there's news of a new SOAD studio album?

I'm just kidding, of course.  But seriously, can we?

Been listening to Toxicity constantly the past few days. Forgot how much I love this album.

And I definitely would like to catch them on this new tour. They've been on the concert bucket list for quite awhile.

I guess this is getting revived.

So where do I even begin. My first real obsession with a band. It all started when I overheard my sister listening to Chop Suey probably 10 years ago, never looked into hearing more songs by them at that time. A few years later I googled some of the lyrics and found the song again. Still nothing more happened. Then I heard BYOB and I was hooked. Thus began the process of listening to every album one by one and my passion for SOAD grew with each one. I wish I could remember most things like I do with the lyrics of their songs. I really enjoy their sound and Serj's voice is just so unique and beautiful. Toxicity wins best album for me. So after a rather long period of SOAD obsession Dream Theater made an entrance in my life ~1.5 years ago and System took the back seat. I don't think I could have made a more polar step in my musical preferences.

I am yet to go to a SOAD concert, those look like a ton of fun.

Amusingly, Slipknot and SOAD co-headlined the Pledge of Allegiance Tour in 2001.

Hypnotize is Scorp's all-time favorite album I believe (or was it Mezmerize? damnit)

Anyway yea I like a few songs from both (I prefer Mez) but I never 'really liked' the albums, not as much as Toxicity and Steal This Album!

Me too. There used to be a time when I kept spinning these two albums more than anything else in my collection. However, even though I like these two and Toxicity (and SOAD as a whole), I just couldn't get into STA and the debut. I'm not sure why. STA was a tad incoherent, the debut bored me somewhat. Sugar is, however, hilarious.  :D

Why is that?

I miss the band too.  I was quite a big fan of their stuff.  Probably not as much now, but I'd definitely look forward to a new release.

When Mesmerise/Hypnotize first came out, I played them a lot. But after a while, a lot of little things started to rub me the wrong way. Both albums feel too short on their own to me, and too long when put together. Plus, there are a few tracks on both I'm not mad on. I tried for a while to create my ideal version of the two as one album, but never felt happy with it.

I thought Mezmerize was pretty good but Hypnotize just felt completely bland from start to finish.

Way too much Daron.

This is my opinion exactly too.  Mezmerize was almost as good as Toxciticy, but Hypnotize was a bit of a let down.  I was pissed at the lack of Serj on that one too.

Yup, pretty much the same. I think would be perfect for me if it had Innervision and Highway Song in place of Jet Pilot and Shimmy.

What do you guys think of Scars on Broadway. Seeing you don't really like to hear Daron that much. I like some songs on that album.

I don't dislike his voice, but I don't think he's a good lead singer, I assume you know the chorus of Roulette from Steal This Album!, those are the moments I truly enjoy his singing, the high-pitched backing vocals.

Don't know a lot of Scars on Broadway songs, but I remember there was one song on Guitar Hero 5 from them and I thought it was pretty boring.

Yeah it's not like Load & Reload.  In SOADs case it does sound like all the worst songs are on the second album ( to me ).

I can't definitively say which I think is better out of Load or Reload. They both have great songs.

To this day I really like Toxicity, maybe a top 50 album for me, it's heavy, it's weird, it's catchy and it has something that just grabs me.

I wanted to really like all their other stuff and for a while I thought they could hold up, but the more I listened to STA and the debut, the more bland they became and I really couldn't get into Hypnotize/Mezmerise. It seems that everything I liked about Toxicity they left out and everything that annoyed me on Toxicity was used again. It's not a general change in style it's just that those little thigns are missing.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Mezmerize is a top 50 album for me for sure and I really love Hypnotize as well. I like the more melodious and sharp sound of those albums compared to the older material. I loved both Scars on Broadway and Elect the Dead (especially EtD!) too.

Too bad that Serj took an interest in other musical directions and Daron is not productive at all, really. I wonder what happened to the second Scars on Broadway album (I remember there even being a teaser/single?). It was good hearing Daron on Linkin Park's Rebellion with some SOAD-eque vocal harmonies, at least.

Every time I see a SOAD thread I can't help being dissapointed there is no new material on the way. For older artists I wouldn't mind, but I feel these guys stopped way too soon.

While most people rate Mezmerize a lot higher than Hypnotize, Hpynotize has - for quite a while - been my favourite album of all time, so I obviously am not part of these people.

Mezmerize is still awesome though.

All of their albums are gold. My favorite band.

Hypnotize has a couple meh tracks toward the end, but otherwise every song (including unreleased/non-album) is amazing.

Mezmerize (that's the first one of the dual albums, right?) is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Toxicity is nearly right there with it. I enjoy Elct the Dead a lot, and I like parts of Serj's third album. The second one he did in 2010 was bland bland bland, though. None of them come close to the SOAD stuff though.

It's funny that for all the "Tool never releasing a new album" jokes, we've gone without a new SOAD a bit longer. I do miss hearing new things from them, but I don't mind if they never do a new studio release again. The run they had was really satisfying.

Toxicity
Mezmerize  (all of them solid imo)
Hypnotize

Steal this Album!  (The leftovers from the Toxicity sessions, their weakest)

Never heard the debut (though i know the praise for it).

I can't definitively say which I think is better out of Load or Reload. They both have great songs.
For me, it's almost the exact opposite. Reload has like two songs worth anyone's time. Both Mesmerise and Hypnotize are about half mediocre to bad, half great.

It's funny that for all the "Tool never releasing a new album" jokes, we've gone without a new SOAD a bit longer. I do miss hearing new things from them, but I don't mind if they never do a new studio release again. The run they had was really satisfying.
SOAD stated they were on hiatus though, and even now that they're touring occasionally again, they've never given the impression we should expect anything, or have they?

This thread has inspired to try again with the Mesmerise/Hypnotize mix. This is what I've come up with this time around:

Attack
BYOB
Dreaming
Holy Mountains
Vicinity of Obscenity
Cigaro
Radio/Video
Hypnotize
Question!
Sad Statue
Lost in Hollywood
Soldier Side

12 tracks, 45 minutes.
