Revisiting Deadwood
« on: December 07, 2012, 09:20:41 PM »
We’re illegal.  Our whole goal is to get annexed to the united fuckin’ states.  We start holdin’ trials, what’s to keep the United States fuckin’ Congress from sayin’, “Oh, excuse us, we didn’t realize you were a fuckin’ sovereign community and nation out there.  Where’s your cocksucker’s flag?  Where’s your fuckin’ navy or the like?  Maybe when we make our treaty with the Sioux we should treat you people like renegade fuckin’ Indians.  Deny your fuckin’ gold and property claims.  And hand everything over instead to our ne’er-do-well cousins and brother’s in law.”
Al Swearengen.

Welcome to Deadwood. No, this thread is not about erectile dysfunction; it's about one of my favorite artworks of all time.
I didn't do black Friday this year , I only ever did it once in my 4 years in the U.S but this time with all the calls to boycott of Wal Mart and Best Buy on that day for how they treat their employees, it surely didn't feel right. But for a while now I've been wanting to get the BluRay box set of Deadwood complete series and haven't been able to afford it's 90$ price last year or 160$ the year before, I had my mind set on it this time around, long story short I got it online on Cyber Monday for 60$, it's still at that price.
I had watched the show directly after it's run ended a few years ago, so glad now I didn't go for the individual seasons DVD box sets, the BluRay complete series is a beauty. I'll take pictures and post them if anybody is interested.
If we're discussing the show I have to warn people who intend on seeing it that there will probably be unfiltered spoilers.
Just watch the episode where the two teenagers got what's coming to them at the hands of Cy Tolliver, Tolliver is my least favorite character on the show but I loved in this episode for the way he punished these little fuckers, it's rare that you get to see a character that pissed you off so bad beaten and shot to death.
So much impressing attention to detail on this show, was there ever a show that matched Deadwood's amazing cinematography and sets? short maybe the pilot of The Walking Dead.
Would it be a bit too far if we spoke in the language of Deadwood in this thread?
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

Best.......show........ever. (in before people start yelling "THE WIRE!" at me)

I can't think of a single flaw in this show. The worst I can think of is some things that aren't as brilliant as other things, but nothing bad at all. I just love it. I even have a (fading sadly) Bullock and Star Hardware shirt that I used to wear all the time.

Does the Blu Ray box set have any extras that the individual box sets didn't have?

Sorry Adami, but I'm here to yell THE WIRE!

I've seen both shows, and Deadwood, while really well done, doesn't hold a candle to The Wire. The Wire has superior characters, superior writing, superior acting, superior setting, superior messages, and its a helluva lot more impressive for its incredible scope and thought provoking in its ambition. Now, with that being said, I realize that all the above are subjective, and little more than my opinion, but I felt the need to put my two cents out there. The above is, also, in no way a slight at Deadwood because if we're being honest, no television show ever created holds a candle to the wire.

As for Deadwood, I love me some Swearengen

How about you create a The Wire thread so I can not post there. :)

:)    You asked for it in your first post...

Just out of curiosity, have you seen The Wire? I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I think as a Deadwood fan you would appreciate The Wire, even if you find it doesn't hold up against Deadwood.

There's one extra disc of bonus features that is exclusive to this box set, I haven't gotten to it yet but it has a featurette of David Milch walking through the streets of the camp and narrating what his vision for season 4 was.
Also the box itself is fuckin beautiful man, it's in the shape of a book with the discs in pages on one side and some kick ass artwork on the opposite side, including pictures of the original Deadwood and it's real characters and other stuff.
I dunno what the video quality was like on the DVDs but on these BluRays the quality of the picture is amazing and the transfer rate is flawless.
Other than that all the other discs contain the same stuff the individual DVD box sets had.
I learned a bunch of thing from Deadwood but now I recall two:
- Even the most perfect people have a racial slur, squrehead!
- Black people's use of "was" when it's grammatically correct to use "were" is actually an old west thing :lol

It's on my "Should check out" list, I heard a lot of praise.

I dunno if I can buy the blu ray set since I already have the normal DVDs and can't really justify that yet.

But I actually went to the real Deadwood a few months ago................quite underwhelming.

I'll fuckin second Adami on that, take that fuckin talk elsewhere. Or Dan Dority might have a say heh

Milch says they reenact the murder of Hickock a hundred times a day but nobody would tell you about how Asian prostitutes were treated and fucked to death.

Well I didn't see any re-enactment. I saw a bunch of bars and casinos and the words "Wild Bill" shoe horned into everything. I saw the Bullock Hotel, a bunch of Wild Bill places, a sign about where he was killed, another about where Jack was captured for killing him, and a few mentions of Calamity Jane and Charlie Utter. That's about it.

It should just be called "WILD BILL HICKOK DIED HERE town".

There was a Gem something, not theatre though.

And no, the original deadwood burned down....then was rebuilt.....then burned down again. It's a very modern town now. Nothing old about it at all. :(

That's what I thought, my wife is still determined to see it though.
I so hate that it ended so early, I'm considering watching Justified and pretending the lead character is Bullock's descendant hehe

If you ever watch the show Six Feet Under, quite a few Deadwood folk show up there. I remember watching it and being thrilled when Trixie, Dan, the widow Garret, Martha Bullock, Elsworth, and possibly others showed up from time to time.

I hope Guineapig shows up, I know he'll have a few things to complain about (I don't think I've seen a post of his that didn't) but I'm pretty sure over all he loved this show too.

I do have some criticisms of Deadwood, but it's a fucking phenomenal show, and I pity any hoopleheaded cocksucker who ain't seen it.

It has the best-written and most quotable dialogue of any show, ever.

As for Deadwood alums showing up in things, Adami, you should watch Justified.  Not only is it a great show, but you can just imagine it as the sequel to Deadwood, where after the town burned down, Bullock traveled forward in time to Kentucky.

On a more positive note, here is something else Deadwood can lay claim to: the best set ever.  Seriously.  How awesome was that town?  It allowed for the sort of shots you almost never see on TV (or films for that matter), and was always so stacked with extras that it felt like a real place.

I still believe there's some hope. It's a long shot, but last a check lots of people close to the project (including Ian McShane) were still really interested in doing it one day.

It doesn't matter.  It's almost been 7 years since it was cancelled.  The sets, props, etc. were disbanded/sold long ago.  It was by no means a cheap show to make, and there's simply no incentive for HBO or anyone to invest a large amount of capital for one more season.

David Milch has moved on.  I suggest everyone else should, too.

Sorry man, it's dead and fed to Woo's pigs sadly.

Also I'd like to give mention to Doc Cochran who generally goes unmentioned when compared to the likes of Swearengen and Bullock and Toliver, but his performances were, in my opinion, brilliant from start to finish.

Had a day off work today and have been laying on the couch. Decided to check this series out, just watched the first four episodes. I'm hooked as hooked can get. Wow. Great acting, writing, production. Looks like i know where all my spare tv time will go.

Haven't had internet for a week so I dug into my Deadwood BluRays, I didn't get a chance when I first got them to watch the extras so I started a bit.
David Milch is a genius, for season 1 extras he has a couple of interviews that are incredibly thought provoking and insightful on American history and how Deadwood was a mini-version or a time lapse example of how the whole country came about.

I still have low hopes. The script is probably the easiest part to finish. And even that took like 15 years. Here's hoping though.

I'm trying to temper my optimism as well. It's good to know there's at least a script and story in place now.

I was WAY late to the Deadwood game....as in didn't watch it until last summer so the wait hasn't been as long for me.

I'll always know him best from Deadwood. What an amazing performance he gave us.

yeah....that character was pretty hard nosed and tough. I'm curious as to if when they wrote the movie script that HBO has now if they knew he was in bad health and wrote his character out?

It's official  :yarr
https://www.hbo.com/deadwood/movie-what-to-know-so-far.html

I will believe it after I have just watched it.

Not before. I can sit down to watch it, and until it is actually happening on screen in front of me, I will remain skeptical about it actually being real.

Sorry, been burned way too many times by them.

I don't care of Sweringan himself calls me a cock sucker for doubting it, until I am actually watching it, it's not real.

They can show production pics and I'll remain skeptical. They can show trailers and I'll be skeptical. They can do "up next, Deadwood the movie" and I'll remain skeptical.
