The Count Of Tuscany
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:24:46 PM »
Ok guys, I know that this has been talked over and discussed, but here it is anyways...

I love the song "The Count Of Tuscany" it gives me the shivers to hear the lyrics... I love playing it, love hearing it, love it... I do wander, there are three meanings to this song (as long as I know) and the meaning number one is, which is more plausible and justified by Mr. Petrucci him self:

- True story, Mr. John Petrucci and the Guitar Technician, which is also a wine importer, went into a museum of wines and they met the Count Niccolò Capponi an historian gentlemen bred from Royal Blood, beared and always sucking on his pipe...
see the details the words from Petrucci's himself:
https://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/m2346868-p6.aspx;

and the story of mr Niccolò Caponni: https://www.music.iastate.edu/courses/471/capponi.htm

The Truth Number two:

- a very non-sense truthcarrying a connection about Systematic Chaos and the song, I will not tell in my words what truth is this because some DTforum member wrote this, and I do respect his opinion but I'm obligued to disagree and question about the true meaning of the song. Here's the link to the 2nd truth: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=30053.0

And at last, the last truth:

- A silly story about a sex get away of Petrucci himself... I can't remember where I read this but I found it quite hilarious... Specially when the same person refers to the line in the lyrics "sucking on his pipe" a sexual gesture... God save the naive minds... Why the hell would Mr. Petrucci write a lyric sorrounding his sexual adventures??

So, my question is, which of these 3 truths is the real truth??

It doesn't really have to do with American culture (not eveyone here is a UScitizen!)... it's just the general spirit of this forum. We take most things very light heartedly, unless it's Kevin Moore. Or Mike Portnoy. Or The Count Of Tuscany.  :lol  (and yes, this is a joke too  :lol )

Hey, I didn't know you were Sweden! It's about five of you on the boards, right? :)

Also, the fact that TCOT might be a blown out of proportions metaphor of a sexual adventure by JP is utterly awesome and ridiculous at the same time. :)

I don't know exactly how many there are. Off the top of my head I can mention Zydar, Zantera and Lynxo but there might be more.

And yeah, the sex thing was pretty hilarious :lol

Nothing to add, just adding to the list of the Europeans.

It is definitely truth number one, though.

oh and #3
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Anyway, to add a little seriousness:
Yes, the first version is correct.

However, that didn't stop people from joking around:

the worst art of it is that many people believe in #2 and #3... They're just ridiculous explanations, probably someone told that joking arround and the fact is that many people believed in that... However, the song is truly amazing, and it must've been (if in fact was like in the lyrics) quite an adventure for Petrucci... XD

I think they were a bit tipsy and he got all paranoid for some reason. Not sure. It never interested me enough I guess.

See, Filipe, once we run through all the jokes, we actually start productive discussions

Germany's here, too, btw.

Maybe something really bad happened down there and playing it down as "being a little paranoid without a reason" was John's way to secretly rewrite the past?
