70s Zeppelin

After that, 70s Kansas and 70s Tull are real close to 90s DT.

I'm surprised no one's thrown 00s Devin Townsend out there yet considering this board... but I probably wouldn't take it over 90s Dream Theater.

And yes, it's easy for FII to be in a best decade of music.  That album is better than almost anything by any other band, (and better than ACOS).

I picked 90's DT.   I heard IAW the day it was released, and by the time I got to SFAM, I knew that they have forever usurped 70's Rush.

ok, so here is some data from the Top 50 Database.  Understand that this only compiles the lists of people that have done top 50 threads, so it is not representative of DTF as a whole, just a small portion.  And this has no way of comparing the worst albums by each band nor does it really show bands that had incredible consistency.  I do find it interesting none the less.  But some of this is downright silly.

Here is the top 20 artist/decade coupling:

Rank   Decade   Artist                               Points
1      1990s    Dream Theater                        1567
2      2000s    Porcupine Tree/SW/No-Man/Bass Comm   1048
3      1970s    Pink Floyd                            935
4      2000s    Devin Townsend/SYL                    903
5      2000s    Dream Theater                         827
6      2000s    Opeth                                 809
7      1980s    Iron Maiden                           667
8      2000s    Thrice                                535
9      1980s    Metallica                             500
10     2000s    Between the Buried and Me             494
11     2000s    Coheed and Cambria                    484
12     2000s    dredg                                 481
13     1980s    Queensr˙che                           416
14     1970s    Yes                                   408
15     1980s    Rush                                  355
16     2000s    Pain of Salvation                     347
17     2000s    Radiohead                             345
18     2000s    Arjen Lucassen/Ayreon/Star One        341
19     2000s    maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot          338
20     2000s    System of a Down                      313

As I have been saying, Rush has been vastly underrated in these lists, especially considering the music this board listens to.  80's Rush at 15?  70's Rush didn't even make this list at 22!  80's Ryche, 70's Yes are also very low.
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

00's Thrice
00's Between the Buried and Me
00's Fair to Midland
00's Porcupine Tree
00's Avenged Sevenfold
00's Anathema
00's Coheed and Cambria

so actually this is a good thing for DT, it proves that their 90's work is my favorite body of work from the 90's, just not my favorite decade of music from any band.

I vote 60's Beatles over anything.

Plus:

00's Opeth
70's Pink Floyd
00's Porcupine Tree

1980s Rush
2000s Porcupine Tree
1970s Yes (possibly)
1970s Van der Graaf Generator (possibly...I've been really into them lately)

If SDOIT was released in the 90s then I may have voted for DT.

97' - 2007' Pain of Salvation blows everything away. Despite Scarsick being there.
It blows a shitload of stuff away but... Images, Awake...

Gee, I dunno - extend that decade to SDOIT and it is definitely my favorite ever.

Awake is my fav DT album, but I like PoS a lot more than DT and TPE is my favorite album ever, so it's always going to win with me.

Ok, '90s DT has-

IaW - mostly perfect
Awake - don't much care for as a whole, but several good songs
FII - one of my favourites with a few clunkers
SFAM - damn near perfect

3 of my top 4 DT albums, excluding #1. That's a good run. I think the closest contender for me would be '80s VH, helped by the fact that they were much more prolific, although not quite as consistent, so it's kind of apples to oranges.

That would be a tough call for me. Right now I'm leaning towards VH, but not enough to vote quite yet.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

As much as I love Images, Awake and Scenes, I can't vote for DT. I don't like FII that much and some bands have been even better during some decade, for example these:

90s Paradise Lost
00s Katatonia
90s Opeth
90s Porcupine Tree
00s OSI

Any other.

00s Animal Alpha
90s Nightwish
10s Djerv

But I can't think of a full decade which I'd enjoy more (AA was only 7 years active, NW 4 and Djerv 3). 80s Queensr˙che and 80s and 90s Ministry come very close though.

Yeah. Even people speak English as their first language wouldn't have a very easy time with it. Jim Mora has this chaotic tendency to interrupt himself mid-sentence when he's worked up about something.

Sounds like several of my teachers... and then they wonder why our notes look like crap ;D

Anyway, I did decide there's no decade of music I like better than 90's DT, ESPECIALLY when you extend it to 02, since most people are cheating by extending and arbitrarily deciding on boundaries anyway.

DT in the 90's had no missteps for me which can't be said for any other decade by any other of my fave bands, and even if that is the case, the highs are generally not as high. Some of my other favorite bands haven't put out more than three albums in one decade, also. I think the fact I'm not overly enamoured with whatever MA/SW are doing helps me differ from the rest of the forum :D

Bands that come close:
00's Dark Tranquillity
70's Queen
80's Queen (not without a misstep either)
00's Riverside
90's Dark Tranquillity (with Skydancer being the less-shiny debut and The Mind's Eye being a bit dull, but the other two, WHOA)
00's PoS
00's OSI (only three albums)
00's Amorphis (and only the second half... see why this is hard?)
00's Sonata Arctica

Hmmmm, this is a tough one.  On the one hand, all of my favourite Dream Theater albums and songs are from their 90's output.  On the other hand, though, I can think of a couple of bands that I like that had decades that rival DT's 90's run, namely:

90's Savatage:  Streets, Edge Of Thorns, Handful Of Rain, Dead Winter Dead, Wake Of Magellan
80's Queensryche:  s/tEP, The Warning, Rage For Order, Operation: Mindcrime

I&W/Awake/ACOS/FII/SFAM is more or less equal in my mind to QR's EP/Warning/RFO/O:M, and that Savatage run of Streets/EOT/HOR/DWD/TWOM is just absolutely godly.

So no, DT does not have the best decade of music IMO.  Definitely in the top three, but I think Savatage wins this one for me, with DT and QR being tied for second.
