They're pretty fun live. I saw them in a tiny venue in Philly and it honestly felt more like a party/watching my friends band or something rather than an actual show. But they played really well and were entertaining throughout.

That the Milkboy show you're talking about? That was a surprisingly good place for the show. In Philly though I've also seen them at Underground Arts, Ardmore Music Hall, and the Foundry.

The Underground Arts show actually with In The Presence Of Wolves (I think?) and a few other bands. I also saw them at the Foundry with Haken but that felt much more "professional" and less like seeing my buddies play a local show. I missed their most recent show at Ardmore unfortunately.

Yeah, ItPoW played the Underground show. It's too bad you missed the Milkboy show, they had some pretty neat openers on that as well.

Still having trouble really getting into the new album. As someone who almost exclusively listens to albums front to back when I'm listening to music, it's just a little bit too much for me to be honest. I'm never really not enjoying what I'm hearing, but it all just kind of blends together by the end. I'd probably be enjoying it as an album more if it was a good 15-20 minutes shorter.

Agreed. I loved Stranger Heads Prevail and while it was still kind of long, I felt it was appropriate. This album just gets tiring to me. I’ve only heard it twice but it’s just overwhelming

Philly is an obvious hit. If the last two shows were Sat/Sun instead of Fri/Sat they would be locks as well, but I'll likely just play those by ear. I think I'd rather make sure I spread the goodness throughout the calendar and will likely head out to either Denver or San Jose for a weekend hop around one of those shows.

I'm listening to these guys for the first time right now (Terraformer). Great stuff. Reminds me of Dance Gavin Dance pushed through a jazz Zappa blender. Nice!

That's awesome, also I'm a new fan.  Recently got Terraformer as my introduction.  Still digesting this one, it's quite different than other music I've heard before which really intrigues me.  The vocals have taken some time to get used to, but now that I am, I am really able to enjoy the music which is fantastic.

They are playing close by in December but that's when I'll be away for a work trip  :(

Fantastic. What an awesome 80s tune.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

They did in the past as a live cover, nice to see it finally get a proper release.

In other news, if anyone is going to be at the Denver show on Saturday, feel free to say hello. :D

Thirded. As someone who likes to listen to an album front to back this is actually one of my biggest complaints in the digital "post-album" music world; Every release is so. damn. long.

Most albums used to be 45-60 minutes, with the big epic double albums being 75-90 minutes. Now EVERY album has to 65 minutes or longer. Very few albums have any business being longer than an hour. Edit that shit down.

I've been thinking about this for a while: is releasing long albums in the age of streaming actually advantageous? On one hand, I suppose more music = more streams = more money. But I feel it'd be even more advantageous to have shorter albums if it means they get released more frequently, as I imagine that would keep your traffic up and give you more of those big, album-just-came-out spikes in streams. Then again I'm not basing any of this off of any actual data, so I could be way off the mark.

(also yeah Terraformer is still like 30 minutes too long)

Ok just watched the Party all the Time video. 3 thoughts.
1. I didn't know David Arquette played guitar for them.
2. What's up with the naked old man playing keyboards?
3. Are the cymbals a nod to Mangini?

Ok 4 thoughts.
4. That ending was cool.

I think having more tracks = more money plays a role but I think it's mostly artists not having any pressure to self-edit albums down. Back in "the day" a musician had time constraints on vinyl/cassette/CD, and studio time was expensive. They had to pick the best of the best. Now it's a free for all and they're probably not going to think, "oh I'll save that song for another album so I can get more plays overall" even though, like you said, it may actually be advantageous to do so.

terraformer is too long, i'll also agree
both too many songs and a lot of 'em go on too long. there's a really excellent 60ish minute album in there though

I agree with all the sentiments that Terraformer is too long, but would be fantastic as a hour-ish long album.

Oh god, I hope they incorporate just a little Tech death into their sound. That would be awesome. But I guess then they would just be Rivers of Nihil with more horns... :corn

Ooo....I like this one. I always wondered how they would sound if they went a bit heavier. It's a nice contrast to the vocals and the horns.
