That ain't what I meant. I was using Focus as an umbrella term for Cynic's style of music done in a viscerally intense manner not seen since Focus.
No, that's exactly what you asked for. You wanted them to give their 'Focus sound' another shot and I was positing why they might not.
I think
Traced In Air is probably the closest they'll ever come. Maybe they should've retired the name and done this all under something different, but, for better or worse, they didn't and now they've clearly moved on from that sound.
I think, at this point, it's best to just appreciate
Focus for what it is; an anomaly, an aberration in Cynic's career made on the heels of
Human and one that's not likely to be recreated again.
One thing I am surprised about is that after Cynic's break-up in the 90's, no other bands really picked up 'that sound' and continued to develop it. This is especially surprising considering the burgeoning tech death metal movement in the mid and early 90's. Maybe I'm just unaware of any such attempts, but usually when something is as popular as
Focus was, other bands practically jump all over each other to recreate that sound.
