Look, just cause Carlos Silva and Oliver Perez got stupid deals doesn't mean you offer a very good, but not great pitcher about 1.5 times his worth.

Also, the Yankees can flex their financial muscle in this situation.

Let's never mention Oliver Perez in this thread again, OK?

OLIVER PEREZ

Johnny Gomes 2/10 to BOS
Reports are that Napoli isn't being seen as a full time catcher. That's going to kill his value.

Don't know why it would since he's not a very good catcher and everyone knows it. If anyone is gonna give him and contract, they know it's only for the bat, not for the defense.

He's not a horrible catcher, but his offense is REALLY good. Like, if Montero can be as good as Napoli, that's a good thing. Napoli's only problem is that he doesn't catch many games. I don't even think he'll count as a C next year in Yahoo! fantasy baseball.

Because he's not a very good catcher! He doesn't have a good arm and balls get pass him very easily! When he was with the Angels he was always in a platoon with Jeff Mathis and last year with Torrealba. Honestly I think the only time when he's only play C was when he first got to Texas.

I'm saying his offense outweighs the passed balls.

I'm saying that because of his offense, his value won't be kill (outside of fantasy baseball) which was your original point.

Oh, the fantasy thing was a minor gripe, I guess. Napoli would be an excellent player to have because his C/DH/1B abilities. However, if he were seen as more of a fulltime C (which has been the narrative until a day or two ago [the guys I talk to don't even see how that was the case to begin with]), he would have commanded a much higher salary.

Which is interesting, isn't it? How players who can play more than one position command less money than one who only plays a single one. You would think the multipositional guy is more valuable.

Well, not if it's C/DH/1B. Napolis production isn't expensive to reproduce from 1B from a FULLTIME player. At C, it's very good. However, he doesn't have the ability to catch many games. Then, DH... eh, he's no Ortiz so why should he make as much money?

No, but I mean like in general. Though, those multipositional players are never big hitters and we all know AVG/HR/RBI is the end all be all for hitters.

Pettitte is reportedly coming back 1/10-11 w/incentives (NYY)
Rivera and Ichiro reportedly coming back  on one year deals (NYY)
Royals have interest in Jon Lester (BOS) and James Shields (TB). The prospect's name they're looking to trade is escaping me.
Russell Martin is drawing interest from the Yankees, Pirates and Mariners.
Ryan Madson is close to a deal with LAA.
Mets reportedly offered Wright 6/100. I think it's fair, but they probably should have offered a little more.
Napoli is meeting with the Rangers today.

Part of me thinks that offering Wright an extension of over 5 years is a mistake, and I'm sure he wants 7.

Barves about to sign BJ Upton. 5-6 years is what's being guessed, still don't have a $ amount. Pending physical.

$75.25 million.

I hope the Braves go for and sign Michael Bourn too, though.

Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio are both HOF eligible this year.  It would be awesome if both got in their first year of eligibility, but it all depends on how the votes fall.

Of the two?  I'm pulling for Biggio, even though Bagwell is a favorite of mine.

Can't imagine one or the other wouldn't. Damn, those guys were GREAT ball players.

Bagwell won't be first ballot. He has some, stupid and not factual, steroids allegations over him and that's enough for the stupid dinosaurs at the BBWA.

Wright just 7/just under 122m. I think the >140m figure is including the 2013 salary (16m)

Yankees don't make an offer.
Martin doesn't want to hold out for an offer.

Yeah, fuck the Pirates  :|
