Red Sox sign Mike Napoli to a 3yr/$39 million deal.

He'll rake in Fenway.
Really surprised the Rangers passed on him.  He'll be great for Boston.  They must have bigger plans (they always do).

Eh, Red Sox need a 1b. He'll probably play there more than at C.

They got him primarily for 1B. With Salty already there, there really isn't much need for another catcher.

Scutaro returns to the Giants 3 years/$20 million. Can't expect him to hit as well as he did down the stretch but there's no one else. The roster is looking like it will be the same for 2013.

I'm surprised the Mets haven't come to terms with Dickey yet.

As much as I dislike Bonds, he should go in as well as Clemens. I agree about McGwire and Sosa

Zack Greinke worth 147m?  I just don't see it.  He's been a good pitcher since his Cy Young season, but not top 5, and certainly not worth 147m. Sure, if he can return to 2009 form, he's worth it, but for a pitcher with ERAs of 4.17, 3.83, and 3.48 since that Cy season, this seems like a massive overpay.

And I can't even imagine what King Felix and Clayton Kershaw are going to command when they hit free agency.  Both are younger and better...first 200m contract for a pitcher?  And with Kemp, Gonzo, Crawford, and now Greinke all making over 20m until atleast 2017 (and Ethier around 15-17m) they are now the new kings of payroll, and it's only going to go up when they try to extend Kershaw long term.

Most people seem to think Kershaw will be the first 200m pitcher. I doubt that he stays a Dodger.  Greinke had a 205 ERA+ in 2009. He's been a little better than league average since then. I think pitching in Dodger Stadium will help, but man, that is a STEEP overpay.

edit: FWIW, Mo has a career 210 ERA+

This signing makes absolutely zero sense to me if they don't plan on keeping Kershaw.  Why sign Greinke if it's going to prevent you from re-signing one of the league's top 5 pitchers?  I understand that the Dodgers are willing to spend money, but I just don't see them being able to spend an additional 200m keeping Kershaw.

And now I wonder if Hamilton will still re-sign with Texas....not sure if he's got a big ego like that, but they just showed him that he wasn't their top priority....and it seems like they prefer Justin Upton to him as well.  I still say he will resign with the Rangers, but to me it seems like he's the backup plan to the backup plan atm.

Should I just make the title: "pls gib me monies" and everyone would know it's the MLB 2013 thread and it's clearly about the Dodgers?

The company I work for purchased the Dodgers earlier this year, the just signed a 5 billion  yes billion dollar deal with Fox for TV rights , that equates to 200 million a year income, so what if their payroll is 200 million...thats the break even point....every ticket sold, every concession sold is just $$$ in their pockets after that...

Yeah. They sure did. The Royals probably only needed the three prospects, but used four. Damn.

It really shouldn't since it's the AL Central.

Well, it looks like the Royals will at least be able to compete with pitching.
