lonestar's roulette v.2 (And We Have a Winner!!!!)
« on: November 13, 2012, 09:46:04 PM »
NOTE-Two slight changes from the PM’s I sent out. First round I will give a slight leeway on the three minute limit, but don’t push it. A few seconds at the most. Secondly, I have yet to hear from King or Kirksnosehair. I know King is balls busy at the moment, so instead of basing the listening order on when songs are received, I will choose the order at random. Songs need to be received by Friday at midnight, PST.

Greetings and salutations. Welcome to my roulette v.2.  My first roulette, I was just coming out of a very dark part of life, and was new to so much. Since then, through the wonderful folks here, my taste have expanded exponentially. I am ready for the best of the best. In that respect, I feel I have gathered those of you whom I feel will be able to satiate my need for the best. Six grizzled veterans of the musical war front. One voracious devourer of music, with a keen eye for the obscure and hidden, and the undisputed king of the roulette. Your fellow contestants are as follows….

Kirksnosehair
Jingle.boy
Kingshmegland
TAC
LOWDZ
Sir Guitar Cozmo
Ravenheart
Obscure

Your mission, via following the minimalistic guidelines that are to come, are to send me the best of what you got hidden, no themes, no genre restrictions, nothing to hold you back. I want you to wow me, to amaze me, to literally blow me out of the water.

My Taste…
For those of you new to my taste, I was raised on ‘70s hard rock and prog, lots of Yes, Rush, The Who, Triumph, and the rest of the gamut of stadium staples. In the eighties, I leaned towards the heavy metal and thrash side, but later found a lot of love for the hair metal that at the time I termed “poser” music. In the late eighties, I discovered Marillion and IQ, and my musical snobbery phase began. In 1992, I heard Pull Me Under on the radio, and everything changed. Up to a year and a half ago, I pretty much stuck to those bands. Lot's of music from the '90s and 00's is wide open and new to me, just ask, you might be surprised. When I sobered up though, exploring music replaced a lot of my drinking time(and that’s a fuckload of time, trust me lol). I now devour bands in an endless chain of awesome. Many variations of metal, rock, prog, etc., I have come to love so much that I never knew existed, and am so hungry for more. Two things that I haven’t acquired a taste for, growl vocals and various sorts of electronic music, but maybe I just haven’t found the right songs yet.

Off limits bands…
This is a toughie, so here’s how it’s gonna work. Any band in my top 50 is a no go. I will post my last fm, but many of those will be available as some I have only heard one or two songs from, basically if a band is in my last.fm, there is a chance that it will be rejected. I feel the best way is to just ask. I will post all round restrictions at the end of this post, and will allow questions about bands for the present round and the next round only. i.e., if it is round 2, I will answer questions about rounds 2 and 3.

My Last.fm

My top 50

Sending format…
Spotify links will work best, as I can save them into playlist. If you aren’t on spotify, then grooveshark or Youtube will do. If a song is not on any format, an email will work as well, my email will be sent to those who don’t already have it.

Scoring…
Six rounds, ten points a round. A finals between the two top scorers at the end. Sweet and simple.
And finally, the round restrictions….

Round 1- Under three minutes. I will only listen to this round’s songs once, so make sure I love it on the first listen. Songs will be listened to in a random order.

Round 2- 3:01 to 4:00 length, songs will be judged on lyrical content mostly, and any of you who have read my reviews know I dig deep into the lyrics, so have them ready,  this round will get two listens to each song.

Round 3-4:01 to 5:00 length, this round will get three listens to each song.

Round 4-5:01 to 6:00 length,  this round will get four listens to each song.

Round 5-6:01 to 7:00 length, another lyrical content round, send the lyrics along with the song, this round will get five listens to each song.

Round 6-7:01 to 8:00 length, this round will get six listens to each song

The finals- each contestant will send me an epic, ten to fifteen minutes in length. The leader’s epic will get two listens, the runner up’s one.

To get everyone acclimated, I am allowing till Friday at midnight, PST, for first round submissions. After that, seeing that you have all the themes at hand, be prepared to be quick.

Good luck my friends.

Couple of questions...

- Round 1... still YT only?
- Are you wanting to discover new bands, or just listen to really good songs?  On one hand, I could send a great song from a band where the rest of their output is largely shit, or from a one-hit wonder.  Conversely, bands that you're "aware" of but not into very deep.  For instance, let's say you only know the radio hits by Kiss... would something from deep in their discography be ok?  If you're doing this largely to discover new bands, I'll stay away from the above two scenario's

Lastly, these time limits are fucking with one idea I had.  I'm gonna send an instrumental for round 2 in protest!   :lol

Is there a way on the Last FM (I don't have a clue what Last FM is or how it works) to tell what song was played. I assume the "1" at the end of a line indicates one listen. So if a band has a 1 on the line, I can still use them? I just don't want to send the same 1 song...
Does that make sense?
I also have no clue WTF Spotify is, so it'll be all YT for me.

That's fine. You can also email me the song. I'll pm you my email address.

As to the last'fm question, I don't think there is a way to tell, but most of those bands with a 1 at the end are probably open, they are bands I might have been browsing around on or skimming over. I got some time this morning, I will go over my last.fm list and make a list of bands that are definitely not available, cool?

Nem/RJ... I've got one for each of you:

:psychosane:

Keep this up and I'll just send 80s gems from Alphaville, Bannanarama, and Culture Club.  Man that Boy George could write.  I heard he poked you once Nem?  Maybe he will again ... soon.

Last.fm... just click the "## plays" hot-link, and that will tell you what songs, how many times.  From there, you can even drill down to see when he played them for most tracks.
Spotify = online pay-for-music service.
YT always a safe bet, but head on over to grooveshark.com.  Searchable, streaming, free service with a huge database of songs.

Interesting that you mention Icarus Witch.  The drummer on their debut (Capture the Magic) is John Passarelli.  I was in a band called Chucklehead with John, prior to Icarus Witch.  I remember seeing him after Chucklehead and he gave me this disc he'd burned for me, of a new band he was in called Icarus Witch.  I still have it somewhere, with the info on it, handwritten with a Sharpie.

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Well, I still don't think you can use it! :D
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I have received songs from all except Ravenheart, Lowdz, and King. Everyone is on it except King, still no word from him.

OK..Sent again!!!! because:

TAC, you're gonna have to send me a different song. The one you sent was so freaking awesome, I didn't want you kicking everyone's ass and we're not even past Round One. Hold back the awesomeness until at least Round 4!

A couple of days back King posted that he was quite busy lately.
