11) Terminator Movies
12) Scarface
13) Shawshank Redemption

Yes to Shawshank Redemption and ABSOLUTELY YES to The Godfather movies.

Most of those are good movies, but...  Look, I get a lot of enjoyment out of movies like a lot of other people do.  But at the end of the day, they're just movies.  I don't consider any movie ever made to be a "must see."  If you are inclined, pretty much anything mentioned so far is a good choice, and most are somewhat considered modern classics, so you really can't go wrong.

I will say that if you watch the Star Wars movies, even though you probably already know enough basic spoilers, I still recommend watching them in the order they were released (IV, V, VI, I, II, III).  And if you start and you don't really like IV all that much, I highly recommend gutting it out and watching V before drawing any definite conclusions.

I don't know what you've seen or haven't, but I just have to make sure you've seen the first 2 Terminator movies and the BTTF trilogy.
I'm not sure it's legal to have not seen them, but I'd say the same about Star Wars too.

Scarface
Field of Dreams
Shawshank Redemption

I love Field of Dreams.

*Edit*

Is Shawshank the one that involves a bunch of teenagers murdering a homeless man?

Seriously, I read that list and raged!

I'm used to that reaction

I'm not sure it's legal to have not seen them, but I'd say the same about Star Wars too.

Terminators were on the list and I forgot them. I've added them.

Despite the countless errors, the Back to the Futures are some of my favorite movies of all time. I can more or less recite them word for word.

No. Shawshank is about Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Rita Hayworth and a sewer full of shit.

And, I don't mean this as a joke, but the fact you've watched Avatar so much and you haven't seen those makes me rage so much harder.

These are the main ones from that list I'd say you need to see (at least of ones I have seen too). I guess you should definitely see Star Wars too if only for the pop culture around it, since you'd probably find it pretty underwhelming if you've never seen it given the hype around it (something that's potentially true for all of these films).

Obligatory plug for Lord Of The Rings if you haven't seen the films.

I will add a few of my own to that list.
Though who knows if you have or haven't seen them.

Airplane I and II
Spaceballs
Blazing Saddles

now, my obscure movies that caught be by surprise but were good:

Mr.Brooks kind of a crime serial killer thriller, with unexpected twists.

Nutz (nuts) ...yes a Barbara Streisand movie makes my list. A movie with some of the best dialogue ever, Richard Dreyfus is a shrink who has to clear Streisand (a high class hooker) as mentally fit to take the stand in her own defense in a manslaughter after she kills Leslie Neilsen (ya the funny guy) a john who gets violent and pushy.

^^very interesting film^^
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

I don't understand how a 23 year old male hasn't seen any 80s and 90s scfi/action movies.

My parents are not movie watchers. I never went to the theaters unless it was a party for someone else, or hell was starting to freeze over. We had no movies in the house other than the movies My sister and I were bought as kids. To top it off, when I liked a movie, it would be the only movie I'd watch for weeks if not months on end. This would leave very little time for other films. I bet I watched the Richie Rich VHS tape at least 100 times... Jungle to Jungle, Little Giants, and The Big Green.. same thing.

Once I hit the 9-10 year old range, my interests were not in movies. I spent days on end building stuff out of legos, linkin logs, k'nex, and erector sets. I saw the occasional new movie (ID4, Armageddon, Titanic, etc...) Today, I have very little desire to watch old movies. I've been spoiled by modern day CGI and film making. I just don't find old movies entertaining, and most of the time they are painful for me to watch. I know everyone says that movies are about the stories and the characters. I disagree to a large extent on that, I believe that's what books and plays are for. In my opinion, movies are there to put something in front of your eyes that you otherwise would not have seen. For example, the Transformers movies are really shitty. The first one was okay, but two and three truly sucked.... from a story, acting, and character stand point. The giant CGI robots and explosions make all that other stuff tolerable. Tora Tora Tora is a great movie, but if you took the same script word-for-word, and put Saving Private Ryan visuals on it, I'd take the one with the visuals any day of the week. I tried watching the original True Grit a few days before going to see the new one. I had to stop watching after about 40 minutes... then I ended up loving the new one. I think the only reason BTTF ranks so high with me is because that's one of the few movies I saw when I was younger that wasn't a movie for kids.

I also don't like watching movies alone. I don't know why. So it's extremely rare that I'll sit down and just watch one. If I do watch a movie with someone else, we usually choose one neither of us has seen. Seeing as almost everyone has seen the movies I have not, it can make it a little difficult.

I had to turn that movie off. I gave that one a legitimate chance and just didn't get it.

Metropolis - the Argentinian cut.

Yeah, it's a German silent film in black and white from 1927... And it's epic (also: notable for first depiction of a robot on screen I seem to remember).

While I generally agree with Bosk about movies aren't as "must see" as people say, Shawshank Redemption is actually "must see".  It really is that great.

Spaceballs

Well, there are two things that are necessary for one to enjoy that movie:  (1) You have to enjoy Mel Brooks' brand of slapstick comedy, and (2) You have to have seen and have a basic knowledge of, primarily Star Wars, and secondarily, other popular '70s and '80s sci-fi for the humor to be relevant and funny.  Not sure where you fall on #1, but your lack of Star Wars knowledge would have made Space Balls seem really stupid, pointless, and unfunny.  On context, I don't blame you for not liking it.

While I generally agree with Bosk about movies aren't as "must see" as people say, Shawshank Redemption is actually "must see".  It really is that great.

Yeah, one of the best dramas ever done.  Definitely one of those movies where by the end of it, you come away feeling like a much more enriched person by virtue of having watched it.

Heat.  First time DeNiro and Pacino were on screen together.  2nd best shootout ever (behind Scarface).

The Usual Suspects
True Romance

These two both have an amazing ensemble, acting and story.

Make that third best.  Say what you want about Faceoff, but she shootout at the drug dealer's pad with Somewhere Over The Rainbow playing is hands down the best shootout ever done.  I'll give you Scarface over that one just because Scarface carries so much cred, but that's it.  It's at least #2.

You have a valid point counselor, but I will respectfully disagree.  Just my opinion.

You know what else has a great shootout, True Romance (as I already mentioned), and Enemy of the State.  Those are like a 14-year old boy losing his virginity though ... it's over way too fast.
