Official Hurricane Sandy Recovery Thread v. Uggghhh
« on: October 25, 2012, 04:55:57 PM »
Models are coverging, and it's lookinging increasingly like the NE and mid-Atlantic US are in for a f'n miserable few days next week:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/post/experts-sound-alarm-on-hurricane-sandy-drawing-comparisons-to-2001-perfect-storm/2012/10/25/f25a81fc-1ed7-11e2-9cd5-b55c38388962_blog.html

So what does everyone think...will it hit?  And where?  Really overhyped, or just sort of overhyped?

Regardless, time to make sure I'm stocked up on books, booze and candles for next week!

It snowed out in South Dakota today, most people were all gloomy and bummed, but I just saw little kids building snowmen outside and I think it's great. ;D

Modestly overhyped with a potential to be a real mess. A lot of the hype is coming from the ECMWF model, which is projecting the storm will hit Delaware and then move into the northeast with the sort of pressure a cat 3 hurricane would have, but that's really, really, REALLY overdone. It's going to get ugly for a lot of the East Coast, but I don't think it's going to be another perfect storm.

Since my neck of the woods got hit by Hurricane Isabel a few years back, I've been a bit of a storm nerd. Can you tell?

I hope a lot of hype! I'm not in the mood for hurricanes or snow.

You forgot Frankenstorm (I've heard that one heard more than a few times).

Storms are awesome.  I hope to go on one of those storm chasing tours sometime.  I'd like to see a tornado in person once.

After the hurricane last year, the river by my apartment flooded route 18 in New Jersey.  Although very close, my complex is on a hill next to the bridge crossing the river.  If this storm happens to be bigger and hits, it's going to be pretty bad.  Luckly I also didn't lose power.

I live on the NJ Shore..not looking forward to this at all...rain and wind I can deal with its all the interupts with travel ( down trees/power lines/flooding) I can do without. My company is based in Chicago but my office is in NYC, so God knows they will expect us in for work Monday and Tuesday, may just telecommute and work from home if they allow me

Being a coastal Connecticut resident this thing has me uneasy. I think its going to be the worst storm the northeast coast has witnessed in my lifetime. That is my thought.

Whether it's a Tropical Storm or a Hurricane when it hits is irrelevant. Thats not why this storm is considered to be so dangerous.

I'm worried about loosing power for a few days.  I'm glad I've got a generator but damn it's expensive to run.

Got wine, books and candles, so we're all set here!

We'll probably get a few inches of rain and some high winds, with a day or two off of work.  We're not in a particularly low-lying area, we live on the second floor, and my car isn't parked near a tree, so it's really just going to be waiting it out, and seeing if we lose power.

Canadian news is even talking that 70% of Canada will be affected.  It's getting a lot of attention here.  Considering how far inland I am (just north of Buffalo), that's a big fuckin deal.

I live in Westchester, NY. I work in a supermarket. We sold out of water yesterday morning at 10am, but get deliveries overnight. Store opens at 7am, no doubt the water is sold out again. When I left the store at 10:30pm last night, the majority of the shelves were empty. The good part about all of this is that I am picking up lots of hours at work. I work part time, and we're all getting asked to work full time hours.

I work 1-8pm today, off Monday. Tuesday I have school from 9am-9:30pm. I am hoping classes are cancelled. Back to work Wednesday morning depending on how bad it is over here. My town will lose power. It's a fact. We lose power when a leaf blows in the wind.

And so it begins...

-Mandatory evacuations for NYC low-lying coastal areas
-Trains, buses and subways shutting down ~7:00 tonight, probably until Wednesday
-Advisories to prep for 7-10 days without power

No rain in the city yet, but cool, humid and low pressure...the cats are starting to freak out.

Glad to have gas heat and a gas range!  (and a well-stocked liquor cabinet)

I hate to do it but it looks like I am going to have to call out of work tomorrow. My daughter will be home as school is already cancelled. I work 40 minutes from home and I can't get caught there with her home alone. My wife works in security and is probably going to have to stay there maybe through the whole storm. Fucking sucks! I want her her home but she is a manager and will probably have to stay.

I need to not worry about work and put my daughter first. I am one of those people who goes to work no matter what so its tough to just make the smart decision.

I just got a call from my boss telling not to worry about work the next couple days. He said take care of business and be safe. That's one less thing to worry about.

As far as being excited about it. I remember back in the 80's when Gloria came through I was young and thought it was awesome. I didn't have a care in the world and nothing to lose. Now owning a home, cars, etc.. Its a different feeling when you don't know what is in store for you.
