Panhandle
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:18:59 PM »
I guess this is mostly for Americans.

Throughout my life, whenever I heard "panhandle" I thought of that bit of Oklahoma that sticks out.
But today my friend said the panhandle refers to Florida's bit that sticks out.
A googling of "panhandle" has Florida as the second result.

So, my question is this:

Which panhandle is the panhandle?

Texas.  And Florida is a wang, not a panhandle.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

Oklahoma's definitely looks more like a panhandle, because Oklahoma looks a like pan, so the northwest part looks like the handle.

Florida's panhandle is also the northwest part, not the part that hangs down like a wang.  What are you, a pervert?

I always thought the NW part of Oklahoma was the panhandle, but then why does everyone say "the panhandle of Texas"?
In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.

Perhaps you should ask bosk to reverse the "e" and "a" in the second half of your user name.

I think of Florida first, but I associate panhandle as a general geographic terms that can be applied to Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, or any other territory that fits the shape.

I always think of it as a general term for a shape of a state, but specifically I would think of Florida.

And yes, the panhandle of Florida is the northwest part of the state from the Flora-Bama bar at Perdido Key to roughly the Apalachicola River (some say it extends all the way to Tallahassee).  It includes the Emerald Coast beaches of Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Fort Walton, Panama City, and Destin among others.
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

Well, you could think of the piece of land that becomes The Aleutian Islands as a kind of panhandle, although peninsula would be a better term for it.

Politically, the southeast part of Alaska forms a panhandle. Technically it's connected to Canada, but Kansas has Texas and the other states that landlock the panhandle. Same goes for Idaho.
