this is only the 3rd time it's been at the very top of a list, but it has been a top 10 album 14 times (only two other albums have even been mentioned 14 times.

So... I've got what might be a silly question - are albums done as honorable mentions included in the stats, or no?

On my long lost list, I&W was, and still is my #1 album as well, as it has been for the last 14 years.  Something knocking from that perch is essentially unfathomible to me.

Yes it is amazing. I still remember that first year with it. I couldn't believe I was investing so much time with a "new" band. But it was music that was so above everything I had ever heard. I mean, I recognized a lot of the different elements, but it was somehow different, and better.

Great list TAC.  Just a tad surprised that Bruce Dickinson didn't make your top 50, especially considering he had H on those albums and how high you rate Maiden in general.   Some of Bruce's solo stuff clearly beats out several Maiden albums IMO.

Yeah those are great albums. When I started the process I listed all of the candidates and my original list had about 85-90 albums. Both Accident At Birth and The Chemical Wedding we're on that list.

They should be on the v2.

They are a bit of an outsider for me too. Strange really as they are my favourite band but I'm not a huge fan of the genre, a couple of bands aside.

Well, One of my first loves was classic Rush. But I am a hard rock fan at heart. Dream Theater marries the two.

My favorite bands are:
1a. Dream Theater
1b. Iron Maiden
1c. UFO
4. Alice Cooper
5. Ronnie James Dio (all things Dio)
6. Thin Lizzy
7. Kiske era Helloween
8. Pre Signals Rush
9. Accept
10. 80's Metallica

Dream Theater really is an outlier of sorts on your 50 list.   Judging by your list, outside of DT, you must have hated the 90s and 00s for music.

That certainly applies to me, and since I'm the same age as TAC it makes a lot of sense. Bands in the 90s/00s played a COMPLETELY different type of rock than what we grew up on. You had all the teen-angsty Nirvana-type crap, horrific nu-metal, dime-a-dozen indie bands, etc etc. Nothing that will ever compare with the Sabbath/Zeppelin/Rush/Aerosmith/Queen/ZZ Top/Scorpions/Maiden/I could go on forever classic rock bands of our youth.

My biggest problem with the 90's wasn't so much the lack of new bands, but more the fact that the bands I liked from the 80's really fell off in terms of quality. The early 90's was still pretty strong, though.

For me, the best thing about the mid to late 90's was Michael Schenker returning to UFO.

And of course the 00's saw these great bands like Maiden and Saxon reemerge stronger than ever.

But yes, the 90's to me we're all about Dream Theater.

As another old Fogey I loved the Grunge movement ...AIC Dirt, Pearl Jam 10 and Soundgarden Bad Motorfinger was such a breathe of fresh air from all the rehashed stuff that was all over the place All 3 of those albums would be in my top 50 easily with Dirt easily being in my top 10 maybe even cracking my top 5

Haha, that's kind of my point.  Throughout the 90s and 00s, you were clinging to your old 80s standbys like UFO, Schenker, Rush, etc but didn't really latch onto any of the newer bands that emerged during that era.

Dream Team makes a great point about Dream Theater though.  They're one of the bands that writes and performs in the tradition of the classic prog/metal/hard rock acts that we grew up on.   To my mind, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Flower Kings, Spocks Beard and Opeth are a few others that fall in the same boat.

I had AIC's Facelift and I just thought it was second rate Armored Saint. I never followed up with them after that.
I also enjoyed the first Black Crowes album very much. As much as I liked some of the tracks on Ten (Black  :metal) I just couldn't make it through the entire album at once.

I just find it fascinating how (generally speaking) the older we get the more we hold current music in disdain.  It's a phenomenon that happens with every single generation.   The refrain is always the same:  "The music sucks nowawadays... it'll be never be as good as enter names of nostagic/classic/oldies bands here."

Music is so powerful that it tends to get anchored to a specific time and place.   So I guess if the music doesn't "speak" to you anymore, it's difficult to relate and easy to dismiss as "bad".   As a 49 y.o., I'm certainly guilty of this.
