Considering a Trip to South Africa. Advice?
« on: September 23, 2012, 07:46:51 PM »
I was born in South Africa. Moved when I was 7. I would like to visit my grandparents, but the crime scares me. I know... I know... I sound like a wuss, but such is life.

Has anyone here visited South Africa / any dangerous country recently? Know anyone who visited South Africa / any dangerous country recently? Any words of encouragement / discouragement about a potential visit?

I've got a long while to decide what to do, and I wanna make sure I'm smart about this. :lol

Are you white?

If so, you should be fine.

As with any place, as long as you do your homework you're perfectly safe.

I went to grad school with a girl from S. Africa.  She has no hesitations about going back.

my best friend is from durban, and he went back there to live a couple years ago. he has since come back to the states, but told me its still a very nice place. its just like anywhere else, really...there are good parts and bad parts. like rumby said, do your homework and youll be fine.
There is so little respek left in the world, that if you look it up in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out.

The State Department is a pretty good resource for trips to oddball places.  They'll tell you what you need to know, including whether or not you should just stay the hell out.

Quite a bit of info on safety concerns, but nothing to terrifying.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.
