Your 3 favourite Rush albums
« on: September 21, 2012, 12:30:37 AM »
So, I'm really starting to like Rush, and this seems a fun way to clarify, which albums should I pick next. I have currently heard 2112, Hemispheres and Permanent Waves and I'm going to listen to A Farewell to Kings and Moving Pictures very soon. But I want to know more.

To cut it to 3 was really hard. So many great albums to leave out. At least half of these albums aretop 50 of all time for me, and I LOVE RTB and PW an enjoy Presto, so no complaints from me.

1. Grace Under Pressure.

It's taken a long while for it to bubble its way up to my top spot, but there's something about the cold production that combines so well with the songwriting that results in a really quite unique, oppressive feel to the record that really hits the spot for me. I still don't have a great deal of love for Red Lenses (at one time I thought it was hands down the worst Rush song), but the rest of the album is superb.

2. Moving Pictures.

Their most consistently good record. Not a weak song to be found.

3. A Farewell To Kings.

It's really the first Rush record that had a big impact on me as I was discovering them.

At different times I might've put Power Windows, Presto and Hemispheres in my top 3, but over time the aforementioned 3 are the ones whose appeal is such that I'm most likely to spontaneously listen to them.

I was considering having Permanent Waves on my Top 3 (Natural Science!), but I chose 2112 instead. Could have gone either way.

2112 is a 4th place for me. The title track is great, but the other tracks bring the total disc down for me.

Couldn't agree more.  2112 *as an album* is overrated.   The title track is not their best "side long epic", and the songs from Side 2 are hit and miss.   Overall, it's an upper/middle tier Rush album for me.

I'm probably the opposite, I find everything except for the title-track to be really good. The title track is not bad, but it hasn't been that memorable for me, I can only remember parts, and I've listened to the album many times.
