Favorite Tom Hanks Characters
« on: September 18, 2012, 10:01:36 AM »
What is your favorite Tom Hanks character and why? I'm not saying best Tom Hanks movie, he doesn't necessarily need to be the focal point.

1) The Lady Killers: When I saw this movie in theaters, it was nothing that I expected it to be. The movie was actually really enjoyable and funny. Tom Hank's character, Professor G.H. Dorr, was probably my favorite roll he has done. It was so different than anything else he has done, and it was a pleasure watching him perform as that character. His accent and the way he spoke blew me away. The lines he had to say, were so fast, long, and complex at times, it must has been a real bitch remembering them all.

2) The Terminal : Tome Hank's playing Viktor Nivorksi was awesome. While the movie itself wasn't amazing, his character was spot on. I fell in love with a guy (no homo) who barely knew English but still managed to make me smile.

3) Catch Me if You Can : Carl Hanratty was excellent. While not the main character in the movie, he was big enough for me to consider this a kind-of Tom Hanks movie. Again, another character with a cool accent.

I don't know why I made this thread. I'm getting really side tracked today in the library and started thinking about Tom Hanks.

THIS.

Although, I'm not as big on Forrest Gump as most people.   But The Burbs and Big are two of my favorites.

Don't really have a favorite role, but Tom Hanks is a notorious mean drunk.  Considering his image, that just really cracks me up.  Try to picture the guy acting like a drunken asshole.   :lol

I think he's amazing as Woody in the Toy Story movies.  Sure, it's just a voice, but the character is all him.

Josh Baskin in Big.  An adult playing a kid trying to be an adult.  Great role, great job.

Viktor Navorski in The Terminal.  You completely forget it's Tom Hanks and just see Viktor after a while.

I really liked the character of Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code, even though he was basically just Tom Hanks with cool hair.

Definitely Josh in Big, I've always loved the scene when he tries to eat the little baby corn as if it were an actual corn cob. His acting is really just excellent throughout the entire film though.  :tup

While I loved him as Josh in Big and the guard inGreen Mile, my favorite role of his would have to be as Jimmy Doogan in A League of Their Own, just awesome.

I came in to post Paul Edgecombe. Frank Darabont talked about how, when he was writing the script, Tom Hanks’ voice kept saying in his head “I’m Paul Edgecombe, I’m Paul Edgecombe.” I also remember some idiot saying it was just Tom Hanks with a lame southern drawl. If that is all you get out of this performance, you need to have your head checked.

Forrest Gump - Forrest Gump
Chuck Nolan - Cast Away
Woody - Toy Story flicks
Ray Peterson - The 'Burbs (the sardine scene alone makes the movie a classic and Hanks nails the performance as a whole)

Hard to pick against this, although his more serious roles in The Green Mile, Forrest Gump and Philadelphia are tough to top.

That is easily the funniest scene of that entire movie.

I liked when they were chasing him around the bus and Dorris is screaming "May! May! Don't use my bat! Use Marla's, it's heaver!"   :rollin

The Forrest Gump voice is first heard in A League of Their Own, too.  The scene were Dottie surprisingly shows up for the last game of the World Series, where Jimmy thinks he is talking to the new catcher and then Dottie stands up and makes him aware that she is there, at one point Jimmy points out that the new catcher is doing "pretty good," the way he says that line is totally the Forrest Gump voice.

Hm - I'll have to keep my ears open for that the next time I watch it. :tup
