Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park for an Opeth beginner?
« on: September 17, 2012, 07:45:02 PM »
Title says it all. Ghost Reveries is my favorite of the two but the atmosphere on Blackwater Park is something that can really draw a listener in, so what say you? Blackwater Park initially drew me to Opeth by the way... so there's that.

Ghost Reveries. More modern-sounding and more clean vocals.

If you like metal more than prog, Blackwater Park.

I started with BWP, but Reveries is a better album to start IMO.

Good, I'm kind of glad the general consensus is Ghost Reveries. It's my favorite Opeth album for sure. My friend is into prog more than metal anyway, so this should work out nicely.

If you like prog more than metal, Ghost Reveries.

I'd say Ghost Reveries for anyone not completely won over on metal. Though I'm not sure why you'd recommend Opeth at all to anyone who isn't into metal to some degree in the first place.

Blackwater Park starts great but gets pretty meh in the second half, Ghost Reveries is much more consistent and maybe even more accessible to an Opeth newbie.

That, but if you put a gun to my head, I'd lay it down like this:

Blackwater Park is a better choice if you wanna be able to enjoy more of their discography overall since Ghost Reveries' general style is more on par with their BWP-present output whereas BWP isn't that radically different from anything except for Heritage and some of Watershed.

However...

Ghost Reveries is a good choice if you're looking to get into their more current output (GR-present as well as whatever comes out in the future barring an unlikely return to their Orchid/Morningrise sound.)

It all comes down to whatever best suits their desires when you take the average of the two factors:

1. Do I prefer being able to get into more of their material or would I rather just get into the latter-era style and have less to enjoy in case I get a little stuck on that style thus making the heavier earlier stuff potentially less palatable.

2. Disregarding point #1, what style do I like more in general?

This, I think. It took me a while to get into them, although maybe if I'd started with GR, I may have been quicker. Either way, they both rule.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Blackwater Park. That's the epitome of Opeth for me. Ghost Reveries always feels.. 'different' from their other stuff.

I'd say so too, but the question doesn't include it as an option.  :-\

Blackwater Park IS Opeth. There's no other option, in my eyes. None of their other albums sum up their sound as well.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

^If I wasn't trying to see things from an outsider's perspective who's never heard Opeth before, that post is dead-on with what I would've posted going with my heart.

Ghost Reveries by far.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Blackwater Park. That's the epitome of Opeth for me. Ghost Reveries always feels.. 'different' from their other stuff.

this, although i prefer GR. I burnt out on BP a long time ago.

after BP, if you like it, I suggest this order;
Still Life
My Arms
Ghost
Water
Morning
Orch

then last but not least Heritage for the sake of completion (although liking the other is no indication of whether you'll like it)
