Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra
« on: September 17, 2012, 01:12:03 PM »
Just started watching this show after several years of seeing bits and pieces while my brother watched it.  I'm about 6 episodes in and it's pretty good.   Sokka is funny, Katara plays the caring sister well, and Aang is still a mystery.  Why didn't he want to be the Avatar?  How does he control his bursts into "Avatar mode"?

I like how we get to see developments within the Fire Nation, but still a lot of questions there too.  Why did they attack to begin with?  What's their endgame, besides simple domination?

I'm not asking these questions to be answered, as I hope they will be as I continue watching the show.

Yeah, my friend has been trying to get me into it, I'm like 6 or 7 episodes in. I've been enjoying it, but at this point I'm kinda just sticking it out because it gets much better from what I've heard.

Same here.  It's good, but I'm waiting for it to move past the "kid show" stigma I've placed on it.

I watched the entire series + the first season of Korra in about two weeks time, ending like two weeks ago. Looking forward to next season, though ATLA was miles better than Korra. The Korra storyline was too fast paced, and the comic relief was just bleh compared to how Sokka was.

James cameron's Avatar is a lot better than M Night Shy-ama-lama-dong-dong's Avatar movie from what I gather :D

The whole series is soooo awesome. Went on a watching binge when I had my wisdom teeth removed. Sadly though also in the top 10 of "worst movie adaptations ever".

Honestly?  Greatest show/story ever IMO.  I've got the Fire and Water nation symbols inked on my back, and I'm naming my daughter Kitara :metal

Fortunately, I have not seen the movie.  M. Night Shamalamadingdong was reason enough for me to skip it.

I saw it on a plane, so at least I didn't pay money for it directly.

This show is one of my favorites. Season 2 is absolutely amazing! My hands still shake and sweat when I watch the finale. It's really great to see the characters really grow throughout the series. You really grow attached to them.

No offense man, but....if you're gonna name your daughter after a fictional character, you should probably spell it right. :-\

Go for it though. Katara is a pretty name.

I understand the complaint about the pacing, but keep in mind that when they were making it, they thought they only had 12 episodes to work with. They had to wrap things up quickly. It wasn't until later that Nick ordered new seasons.

S2 is the best them.

From "The Library" to the "Crossroads of Destiny" it's pure fucking win. S2 is among the best tv ever.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Here's a bunch more, check it out.

Funny story about the first pic. Right after it was taken, we heard someone yell out "FIRE NATION SUCKS!" We turned around to see 5 or 6 Korras and Kataras staring them down, in a fighting stance. It was so fucking awesome. :lol

Season 2 is fantastic, Season 1 is great in its own right, Season 3 has a really dragging first half and a really good second half.

Korra Season 1 is great too... except the finale. I thought it was perfect until that damned finale.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

More like:

It was great until after Noatak and Tarrlock murder/suicide I didn't like how Korra got her powers back. S2 should have started with her looking how to get them back.

Same here. That and I thought they spent waaaay too much time focusing on a character that had only just been introduced an episode before. You want to focus on a new character, that's fine, but not during the freaking finale! And the whole final "battle" was just kind of underwhelming.

And Gadough, as much as I like the villain, I don't think I'd like that. That final scene with those two was just perfect.

In a way, I can sympathize with this. But it doesn't change the facts from the ground. I mean, FII would have been better had it not been geared towards mainstream audiences, but I'm judging the creation out of how it turned out, not how it might have been had it gotten their way. It's a shame though. Still, they have a ton of episodes to work with to turn this series good in the totality of it.

I fucking love this series and the character development. There was a lot of thought put into each of the characters and their backstories, as well as their allegiances.

As for Korra vs. ATLA, I tried to look at it differently; they couldn't possibly recreate the same mystique and epic story the second time around. There are elements I liked and elements I didn't, but overall I found it rather enjoyable. It was nice to see the characters be a little older in this go round.

I've seen ATLA all the way through at least a dozen times and have loved it each time.

As for the finale of Korra S1, I was torn between the finality of it and the maturation that takes place. Without going into spoilers, I think it was the perfect time for that resolution to occur. If I hadn't known there would be a second season, I would have thought it very appropriate. Now I'm just more curious as to how the saga will continue.

That's a good point. The first bunch of episodes feel like normal episodic cartoon filler. It let's us get to know and become attached to the characters before any huge developments start.
