A Dramatic Turn Of Events - One Year On
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:48:34 AM »
September 12th/13th marks the first anniversary of the release of A Dramatic Turn of Events. Just a thread for some reflection on the occasion of this anniversary. Now the album's 'honeymoon' period is over, where do you think it stands within DT's catalogue? Has your view on any of the songs changed, for better or worse, on repeated listening?

IMO, it's gotten BETTER with time.  Especially seeing most of the album live.

A few of the songs are phenomenal. OTBOA, BMUBMD, BTS.

Not a huge fan of the album as a whole for some reason.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Well, it's not my favourite by a long shot, but it can stand beside Dream Theater's very best and not look out of place, that's for sure. There are not Top 10 songs there, but it is amazingly consistent throughout.

Great album, among the band's best efforts.

This.  I hesitated to rank it in the #3 spot early on because, even though it felt like it should rank that high at the time, albums often fall a bit once the newness has worn off.  After having time to fully digest it AND to see it live, it is firmly planted at #3 behind Six Degrees and SFAM.  Such a complete album from start to finish, without a single weak song.  And last time I did a top 10 ranking, two songs made it into the my top 10 list, with a third (Beneath The Surface) hanging just outside.

I haven't listened to it at all this year. While it's a consistently decent album, it never excited me like every other new DT release did, so I only listened to it for a couple of weeks before losing interest entirely. I've tried listening to it a few times more recently, but it didn't hold my interest.
At highest it would be 7th for me, although more like 8th or 9th.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

It did have the new car smell for me for quite a while, but now it feels like an album I'm entirely familiar with, which was the case for every album before it, but it still holds its #1 place besides SDOIT for me.

One song is in my DT Top 10, BAI. The rest range from great to good. I ranked it as 4th on my DT album list after a few weeks, and I guess it's still in that spot. It has aged lot better than SC or BCSL for me.

For me, it's #2 behind Images and Words. It has a wonderfully refreshing quality about it that SC and BC&SL don't have. I feel like they went away from the sense of complete darkness and 'clutter' that those albums have and they've injected some new life into their work. Maybe the light-blue cover art has something to do with it, but it definitely sounds fresher.

This may be a tangent - but for my money - the Three best *sounding* ( i.e production wise ) albums are the three cd's with blue sky or water on the cover :P

Octavarium / Falling Into Infinity & A Dramatic Turn Of Events.

Great album, one of their best.....however, BMU,BMD is one of their worst tracks IMO. It just drags and gets annoying after a while.

After a year I'd say my ranking would be:

Images and Words
Awake

-------------Interchange depending on mood----------------
Scenes from a Memory
Six Degrees
Falling into Infinity
A Dramatic Turn

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Train of Thought
Octavarium

Black Clouds

Systematic Chaos

Aside from the production, I can't really say anything about this album. Everything is well written and well performed.

But...I don't know. Feels a bit too safe for me. Like DT said "Let's just give the fans what they want, and only challenge ourselves on a purely physical level".

Hmm... I partly agree with you. It feels safe, because ADTOE is nothing really special IMO. But I don't think they had a "let's just give the fans what they want" attitude.

I think it was more of a "let's detox with this album".

From what I understand it was more of a "let's show the fans we're still the same band despite having lost a member".

My opinion of the album as a whole has probably gotten a bit lower after repeated listens, but my opinions of some of the individual songs on the album have gotten even more positive.
Sincerely,

I think last time I did my top 10, 2 songs from ADTOE had bumped their way in, with 2 more hanging around the top 20.  Overall this is one of my top 3 albums along with Awake and 8VM and I don't see that changing unless the next album knocks my socks off.

I think it's a great album, then again I think all DT albums are great. I would rank it my 7th favorite honestly, I still think it's good but I just like the other 6 that much more. Bridges in the Sky definitely makes my top 10, but ADToE also has my least favorite DT album closer. Overall it's a great addition to their discography and a step in the right direction over their last 2 albums.

Sits in the middle of my rankings.  I would put it about equal with Train of Thought and 8vm, and better than SC and Black Clouds.

Where would I rank it? Hm. I guess at the moment my ranking would be as follows...

1. Awake
2. Six Degrees
3. Scenes
4. I&W
5. Dramatic
6. FII
7. Black Clouds
8. WDADU
9. ToT
10. SC

So I guess it's 5th, but sometimes I like it more or less than FII.

It's number five on my list, after I&W, SfaM, Six Degrees, and Awake. It would probably be better than Awake if there wasn't BMU, BMD and maybe one less ballad. But it's still a great album, and definitely has some amazing songs.

I've been coming back to it... quite often. That's something I don't really do with a lot of DT albums. I'd say... it's #3 or #4 for me. It may move up as the years go by, but I don't see myself liking it any less than I do now. I love it.

A year later and it's still my favorite. I still hear something new almost every time I play it. Mangini's drumming totally kicks ass.
