Throw some music suggestions at me that I might not know
« on: September 02, 2012, 05:40:23 AM »
Alright, I am a nut when it comes to buying cd's.  If I like something, I NEVER download, I will always purchase it legally, 99% of the time on cd.  I have tried to strip my buying back to new releases only, as my cd collection is getting out of hand, and I'm trying to eliminate cd's that I buy and spin through once and then they collect dust.  So, I'm gonna spend about $30 on some legal mp3's just to get some more music, and see if anything takes my fancy.  If I like anything enough to warrant replaying, I might purchase it in cd format.

I think it's a good idea that I should do it this way to discover some more music, without wasting money and space on cd's that don't get played.  Now, I've thought about doing a roulette, but in all honesty I don't have time, and am a bit over them at the moment.  So, Just list bands and stuff that some of you guys know that I should have but haven't checked out before.  Throw anything, and if I don't know it, I'll probably listen to it.  Anything goes, any genre.

GO!

Praying Mantis - Forever in Time or Time Tells No Lies, whatever you can find.

You're welcome.

EDIT: The only MP3 download I can find is the newest album, Sanctuary - that's great too. It should really appeal to your melodic rock side.

Check out The Amazing Blondel - A Foreign Field That Is Forever England: Live Abroad if you're at all interested in medieval/renaissance progressive folk.

On the ambient front: check out Ezra Yates, especially the album Ouroborous or however it's spelled (infact the guy who does this is bringing out a proggy/asian/middle eastern influenced album for this project in a few months)

On the synth front: try In Sequence - The Dividing Line (the album Rain For Sound is more along the proggy side, although much less polished)

On the chinese front (mainly because I absolutely adore her and her music, and suggest this every time anyone doesn't tell me not to): Lin Di - Bride In Legend

Also try out Our Imperfect Future - The Darkest Storm (kind of dark synth stuff, pretty angry stuff there)

That's all I can think of at the moment, sorry.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Michael Kelsey - Gruvency - Can't really find it online except buying the cd but you can check out two songs on youtube, look up "Midnight Voices" and "Gruvency"

Kaki King - Dreaming Of Revenge - Great cd, great guitar work

Dredg - Catch Without Arms, El Cielo, or [/i]The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion[/i]

Ian Parry's Consortium Project.  It's a 5-album Pentalogy.  Sci-fi/Prog-metal concept albums.  You can sample Enemy Within on YT if you'd like.

I don't know if you've heard of Kayo Dot- Choirs of the Eye... It's been one of my favorite recent finds.

I'd also recommend Seventh Wonder, but I'm almost positive you've heard them already.

Aren't you buying it twice like this though? using something like Spotify or just downloading something would make more sense if you;re going with the try before you buy method.

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones

Their latest album is pretty sweet, Rocket Science, but I would also suggest their great live album Live At The Quick, or another studio album Left Of Cool, or even Outbound. All of those are great. I normally don't suggest live albums first, but Live At The Quick is a magical experience, both on CD and DVD.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, lots of different stuff, will take note.

Ian Parry's Consortium Project.  It's a 5-album Pentalogy.  Sci-fi/Prog-metal concept albums.  You can sample Enemy Within on YT if you'd like.

I already have number 3 (I think) on cd and it's fantastic, will get the rest, good suggestion.

Aren't you buying it twice like this though? using something like Spotify or just downloading something would make more sense if you;re going with the try before you buy method.

I don't think there would be too much that I would buy again on cd, only if it really floors me.  I am funny about downloading and don't have time to go through Grooveshark or Spotify.  If I can buy 50 albums and sort through them at my leisure and yet it still all being legal, I'm happy.

Russian Circles is pretty awesome if you're into borderline post-metal. I'd recommend Empros and Station.

Basic people don't seem to like Animal Alpha, but because you have a diverse music taste, you might like them. Energic rock music with a female vocalist. They have influences from a shitload of different genres. Though I don't know, are there any of their albums in Australia  :P.

Also Ministry's Psalm 69 and Filth Pig. The first is industrial metal, the second one is sludgish intustrial metal.

Kade, you'll just have to wait for my Top 50. Should be around in late 2013  ;D

Seriously though, I've recommended a few in the Mel Rock AOR thread so I'll throw out

Phantom's Opera- Act IV.

Now the bad news, good luck finding it anywhere... There is some of their older stuff on EvilTunes and YT etc, but I've not found much from this album. The older ones are not as good, even though Michael Romeo was in the band early on. I'll just say the singer is Terry Brock...
