I'm recording a 5 track LP next week
« on: July 15, 2009, 11:48:03 PM »
I'll be in the studio (great studio) for 2 weeks recording a 5 track CD with my band, we're called "Urania" and the track listing is as follows: (Track times are estimate)

1. The Cycle of Madness 8:00
2. Rushing Dreams 7:00
3. Never-Ending Love 6:00
4. The Wings 20:00
  I. Learn to Fly
  II. Hang Gliding
  III. The Fall
  IV. Violent Landing
5. A Passage Through my Past Life 14:00

That's about 55 minutes of cool music. Wish me luck, DTF. You guys are having one track or two as soon as I have 'em in my hands. I'm pretty excited  :D

Well this is it.

We're called Urania and we're a progressive metal band that's trying to make a breakthrough in Mexico's poor Metal scene. We've been together for just half a year, and we've done incredible thins. There's a bunch of compromise from every member, and we consist of drums, guitar, bass, vocals and keyboards. I'm a keyboard player myself, and I'm going to record with Yamaha MOTIF ES8 and an Alesis FUSION 8HD synths. There's a big Dream Theater influence on us, for sure, but we are trying to stray as far away as we can from their core sound by incorporating many things DT usually doesn't do, like electronic sequencers, different vocal styles, etc. There's even one section from "The Wings" that has a certain pop song influence. The name of the album is yet undecided, although if things keep going like they are, it's going to be called "The Cycle", all songs share a common thing with cycles, somewhat.

Cool! My prog metal band Endspace will be recording our first album (untitled at the moment) later this month, too (track times are approximate):

1. Ethic Wreck (5:53)
2. The Passage of Time (5:26)

6. The Shadow Cast (7:12)
7. Create a Memory (5:23)
8. Reality Rising (20:00)
      I. Inferno
      II. My Own Prison
      III. Revelation
      IV. A New Season
      V. Beyond
      VI. Rise

Talk about odds! We should play together sometime soon :neverusethis:

Alright, Day 1 is done. Today basically consisted in getting all the cables set straight and the engineer setting up the workspace and recording few drum tracks. Recording is harder than I expected it to be, click tracks are tricky as hell (especially in prog, heh) and I can't tell how nervous my drummer was in the first shots. 3 drum tracks are done by now, and I've got to say that it sounds incredible. The engineer that's producing us is from Argentina and has been in the business for quite some years. Be sure to follow DarkLord's recording diary. More details coming up tomorrow :metardica:

How much is it costing you guys to record, and how many days/hours do you think you're gonna put into it?

We have the studio booked for 2 weeks, and we're working 8 hours approximatedly for every day of the week except Sundays. In dollars, we're paying around 1500-1600 bucks for the whole proyect (includes recording, producing, mixing, editing and the mastering which is going to take place in another studio). It's really exhausting, though. We have to be there in the whole process for matters of production, etc. But so far (1 day, lol), it's been an incredible experience.  :D

haha, yes, the good 'ole click track.  Whenever I record, even just for fun or demo purposes, I ALWAYS record with a click.

Day 2 is complete. This day was great because, all the basic drum tracks were finished. No more intense drumming, no more tempo mistakes...it's all done. We spent about 2 hours making the click map for the long epic track, in which there are lots of tempo changes...it was exhausting but totally worthwhile. The drums are sounding incredible and the bass tracks are going to be recorded tomorrow. Lots of pics are coming whenever I have the time to upload them.  :metal

That's exactly the order we're recording on. Drums with the programmed click track, bass, guitar, keys and at the very end, vocals, sequences, samples, arrangements, etc. Day 3 and Day 4 were great, we already finished with the bass and the guitar, and I'm beginning to record keyboards. I'm going to take a while because there's a lot of patches I use, and I got to record them individually. Things are looking (and sounding) good, :hat

Awesome! Things seem to be moving along quickly. Any photos from the studio? That'd be cool to see! :D

Also do you guys already have someone doing your album art? Or are you gonna figure that out once you finish recording?

I think we're dealing with the album art once we are 100% done.

By the way, I have in my hands the raw, unmixed instrumental demos. They sound amazing! I'll share a track for you right here, it's raw and unmixed so expect some bestialities.

We still have to record all the vocals, which will takes us all of this week. Acording to the engineer, mixing will last for 2 weeks, approximatedly.  :D

We're done! Yesterday, lights in the studio were shut down and we finished all the recording. It was a great experience, I'd say that recording vocals is the funniest experience of all the recording. The engineer also seemed like he was having a great time when recording the vocals. We actually had our singer and 2 girls making some cool harmonies, a'la Pink Floyd. I'm uploading pics and videos pretty soon. Stay tuned  :D

Running times are the following:
The Cycle of Madness. - 8:30
The Wings. - 20:28
Rushing Dreams. - 6:55
Never Ending Love. - 6:15
A Passage through My Past Life. - 12:29

55 minutes in total. A couple of tracks are longer and a couple are shorter. That's mainly because of the click tracks and the BPM we applied to them.  We obviously played the songs without metronome at rehearsals, so applying a click track to them slightly modified their running times.
