Beyond This Life

Yeah. I fucking love SFAM and this is imho the best song from the album. I guess it has something to do with me being a huge Zappa fan. What do you guys think of this song?

I've always loved it, although I wouldn't say it's my favorite from SFAM. Probably not even in my top 3.

It's great, for the most part, but the instrumental part is a tad too weird for my tastes. Otherwise, great song!

Easily one of my favourite individual tracks from the album.
The keyboard solo is one of my favourites, the second guitar solo is killer, and the entire instrumental section is crazy and fun, yet memorable and well crafted.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

One of my favourites on SFAM. My favourite section is the "What we have been is what we are" part.

It's probably my favorite song on the album as well, partly because it reminds me a lot of Deep Purple, due to the heavy organ presence and overall tone. Check out this part at around 5:10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm9-PZJ3buk#t=5m10s

Yeah, this.

It's a very good song, but it's not among the favourites of mine. I enjoy the Zappa section (and the Zappa Jam) a lot more than the rest of the song.

It's great, but SFAM has so many damn great songs, and I just can't say I like this one as much as Home, The Spirit Carries On, Finally Free or Strange Deja Vu.  It speaks volumes about how great SFAM is when a song as great as Beyond This Life is one of the least great songs. :coolio

Favorite song on the album, and my favorite DT instrumental break of all time. By the time it got to the unison at the end the first time I heard it my jaw was basically locked from being dropped so often.  :lol

SFAM is a interesting album.  SDOIT is my favorite.  Behind that, it's a tossup between SFAM and ADTOE.  I love ADTOE as an album.  But aside from Home and The Spirit Carries On, the individual songs don't rank very high in comparison to what I would consider upper-tier DT songs.  That's the interesting thing about the album--a lot of the songs individually are pretty good, but not great.  But when taken together, there is such a synergy that is created that takes the album as a whole to a completely different level.  That's my subjective take on it.

So as to this particular song, it falls squarely within the realm of songs on the album that I really don't listen to individually, but when I do, I enjoy.

me to and it still does :tup happy first post pleased to meet you :-)
The creation and destruction of harmonic and 'statistical' tensions is essential to the maintenance of compositional drama. Any composition (or improvisation) which remains consonant and 'regular' throughout is, for me, equivalent to watching a movie with only 'good guys' in it, or eating cottage cheese.
