Help needed from prog fans
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:57:22 AM »
Hey guys,

Few weeks ago I met a friend of a friend and we started talking about music. Turns out he is a big prog fan but all he really listens to is the older prog, like Rush, King Crimson and Floyd. I offered to send him some music/artists of more modern prog but to be honest I haven't really listened to it myself for quite a while now. I can name PoS, PT and Anathema but there it kinda ends for me (and even then I don't know which songs). So, anyone have any suggestions for what to send him? Preferable also name 1 or 2 songs by the artist, as a sample.

Thanks DTF  ;)

Try some Haken. I'd recommend any song from their two albums, but check out Celestial Elixir and Streams (or Visions of you want a 22 minute song).
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

Transatlantic, Karmakanic, The Flower Kings are all good recommendations

Transatlantic - All of the Above, We All Need Some Light, Stranger in Your Soul, Rose Covered Glasses and Is It Really Happening?

The Flower Kings - There Is More to This World, Circus Brimstone, I Am the Sun, Silent Inferno and End on a High Note

Spock's Beard - The Light, The Doorway, Flow, At the End of the Day and Jaws of Heaven

Why not go with some early Spocks Beard? There's plenty of early yes and genesis floating around in there so, it would be an easy transition for him.

While it's not strictly prog, it's still got a lot of the sounds of prog (like things taking long buildups, uncommon arrangements, mellotron), so try The Besnard Lakes (particularly the album The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night). I really love that one.

Edit: try ...And This Is What We Call Progress, Light Up The Night and Like The Innocent, Like The Ocean Pt. II: The Ocean

Also: Obligatory Cold Fairyland/Lin Di fanboyism inserted here (try CF's Ice Castle, Ghost Town Nightmare and Mirror Theatre and also Lin Di's A Jia Li Yalai, Mountain Song Of The Highlands and Perfect Ghost II).

Milliontown by Frost* would be a good option.  Some Mars Volta would also be good, specifically De-Loused in the Comatorium.

Some of my favorite modern prog songs (most of these are kind of "retro" sounding so if he likes old prog he'll either love these or think they're unoriginal hacks :lol):
The Tangent - Titantic Calls Carpathia, In Earnest
Astra - Barefoot In The Head, The Black Chord
Echolyn - Island, Mei (45 min single song album)
Anglagard - Jordok, Kung Bore, Snardom
Wobbler - La Bealtine
Gazpacho - Gold Star, Golem, Black Lily
DeeExpus - Halfway Home, Me and My Downfall

Thanks a lot guys! I wouldn't have come up with any of this stuff  :tup. I'm still open for more suggestions if you have any, but so far this is already great.

Gazpacho - Night
Astra - The Black Chord
Wobbler - Hinterland
Sylvan - Sceneries
Sean Filkins - War and Peace & Other Stories
Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third
The Pineapple Thief - What Have We Sown?
Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
The Flower Kings - Banks of Eden
Discipline - To Shatter All Accord
Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante
Beardfish - Sleeping in Traffic: Part 2

if those albums don't convince him that modern bands can't do awesome old-school style prog, then nothing will!
Til the moment comes around, like I've been here once before, and I'm questioning the truth, no escaping déjà vu...

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third

I'm not a big fan of any of those other bands you listed, but this album is superb and I'm not sure how I forgot about it.

I'll second votes for Frost*, Spock's Beard and Pendragon.

If you like Frost*, also check Darwin's Radio. Dec Burke did the vocals on the 2nd Frost* album, and Darwin's Radio is his band.

Also

Presto Ballet/One Tragedy at a Time
Flying Colors/Blue Ocean
Cryptic Vision/In a World
The Anabasis/Rome
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".
