Some shameless gloating.  ;D  The company I work for makes pressure vessels, 2 of which were on the powered descent vehicle.  One can be seen in the front right bulkhead wrapped in the silver heat blanket.

Apparently there was once a time when the whole world was mesmerized as a man stepped foot on the moon for the first time. I'd like to see a space mission capture the imaginations of people like that, instead of just debating unrelated politics and name calling.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Agreed. I feel like all it boils down to is whether or not Mars itself will produce a pay off. Of course it won't. Mars is nothing but a rock 36 million miles away (at it's closest). Mars isn't the cool part of the mission, it's what needs to be accomplished to get us there. The technology development and the understanding of our universe is the pay off. I love when people say things like "What did we get from going to the moon other than tang and velcro?" .... uhh... how about fucking micro processing chips that completely revolutionized the day to day life of virtually every human being on this planet.

This is a very appropriate time to post this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_F3pw5F_Pc

Is that a replica of Curiosity?

I think so.  And with it comes photographic evidence that curiosity did, indeed, kill the cat.

I think using the term "photoshopping" to describe what I am doing is either being incredibly generous to me or incredibly insulting to photoshop users.  :lol

That's an amazing picture.

To be honest, I didn't even notice in the link that Coz was quoting you, so I assumed it was him and a bunch of his buds. But no, the "surrounded by teh river" bit.

Well, at the time their was no internet or loads of other TV stations. I bet this would have been huge news if we still lived that way.

This is interesting to say the least.

Yeah, I caught this thread and remembered too.  I MIGHT have caught it on FB before the actual landing, a few friends mentioned it right before.  I was at work and it was slow, so I was able to watch the whole hour prior.  It was surprisingly entertaining!!

Man, some of those comments in that link just remind me that, on average, humanity is literally bursting at the seams with complete morons and jackasses.

What NASA has accomplished here is nothing short of spectacular.  They've built a laboratory that can survive in extremely harsh conditions and can be controlled from over 100 million miles away.  Not only that, but they got it from here to there in one piece, and landed it within feet of where they intended to land it.

I think it's amazing and I think the research is necessary.  And I am thrilled that my tax dollars in some way helped.
