I'll unfortunately be asleep as I have work tomorrow, but anyone interested in astronomy and such should check out the live stream of the landing:

I have been following this for the last 2 years. A good friend of mine has programming code on it from his internship at JPL. I tried having a landing party tonight, but no one I know cares enough :(

Dang, 1:30am might be too rich for my blood. Bummer though, would love to see it. Problem though is that the actual event will drag on over the course of hours.

But I think 1:31AM is the time Curiosity touches Mars. We'll have confirmation by 1:50 whether it survived or not. I can go to sleep at that point lol.

Depends if the satellite orbiting mars runs properly. If not, you'll have to wait a few hours until we can directly reach the landing site.

Balls. Forgot about that. Oh well, I'll stay up regardless. People at my work today (grown men and women) were talking about how funny it would be if it crashed or even missed the planet entirely. One even went as far as saying he hoped it crashed so that the government would stop funding such "pointless bullshit". I said that if it wasn't for NASA and the moon mission, he wouldn't have the iPhone that he plays angry birds on all day.

I hate people like that. This country could do to have more people interested in science.

We don't know that for sure. There is a recurring release of methane on Mars. On Earth, methane comes from volcanoes (mars has a dead core) and organisms doing their thing. Seeing as the surface of Mars is very hostile, it would make sense for life to seek refuge underground. We have no clue what lies beneath the surface :neverusethis:

I have a friend from high school who works for NASA but I don't know what she does there.  I don't think she's going to be on the thing tonight, she works in Houston, and this thing is in Pasadena.
I don’t know what to put here anymore

Well I'm sure she'll be the first to hear if there's a problem.

The thing that makes me sad is that 99.9% of Americans could give a shit. Most wont have a clue what curiosity is unless they stumble on it a few pages into a newspaper tomorrow.

I'm really happy the new crane system worked. I'm truly surprised lol. Scaling this system up opens the door to many new kinds of crafts we can put on the surface.

Edit

Maybe I stand corrected... Every NASA website has crashed due to traffic! :lol

Yes. Space exploration is really that metal. But yes, I'll give the pics a look, space is fascinating.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Yes, precisely this reaction is what I'm hoping for from the general public. We need to pump more funding into this sorta stuff, it's high time the American people got interested in science again.
