Guys, I need your help.
Recently I had this conversation in which the topic of heavy metal came up. One guy stated that he disliked the genre because of all the growly stuff. He seemed to relate to musix he listened to in the past, like Limp Bizkit and Slipknot. When I mentioned Iron Maiden as an example that Metal can be different, he didn't know about the band but generally seemed open-minded.

I'm gonna send him a song that gives an impression of the more sophisticated side of Metal, but I'm not entirely sure which one. So, do you have any suggestions?

Did he ask for a Maiden song or can it be anything?

It also depends on what kind of music he listens to otherwise.

Generally speaking, I'd suggest something by Judas Priest - probably BtRoD, but maybe just because I'm listening to it excessively atm.

I'd go with anything by Maiden really, maybe Angra can be a good example too or Helloween. All 3 bands have very easy to listen songs

Master of Puppets is a classic, and I'd recommend it too. Also Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast, because it's straightforward and catchy. Or Queensr˙che's I Don't Believe in Love.

Also, Dream Theater's You Not Me.

Metal? Sophisticated?  ???

Nah I'm just kidding. Personally it really bothers me when people have old cliché opinions about music, like "metal isn't music, it's just screaming and worshipping Satan" without having any idea what they're talking about.

Well, one of my friends used to be really against metal, so I got him to listen to A Change Of Seasons.

... as in ALL of it (he's also a massive proghead). Instantly he was hooked on DT, and now does listen to a lot of metal, including some of the growly stuff. I'd wait a while before showing Opeth though.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

Why don't you just send him some DT. A Dance of Eternity, if he is into sophisticated musicianship.

  • Hello! My name is Elder Price
There is a lot of great metal that doesn't have harsh vocals of any kind.  There's a lot of goofy metal, but there's also a lot of great metal (same as in any other genre).

Beyond the Realms of Death is a good suggestion.  Any Maiden would be fine.  Rime would be good if you really wanted to blow his mind.

I'd try Queensryche's Suite Sister Mary. Genius in song form right there.

Wrong on so many levels...

Anyway if its an IM song you might as well give him the best,  hallowed be thy name.

you could show him some power metal stuff like Iron Savior, Gamma Ray, Helloween, etc. a lot of Power Metal should be easy to get into.

Here's a few that I just thought of off the top of my head -

Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Symphony X - Through The Looking Glass
Dream Theater - Pull Me Under
Queensryche - Suite Sister Mary
Kamelot - The March of Mephisto
Therion - The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah
Nightwish - The Beauty of the Beast
Epica - The Last Crusade
Crimson Glroy - Burning Bridges
Fates Warning - The Eleventh Hour
Gamma Ray - Rebellion In Dreamland
Iron Maiden - Hollowed Be Thy Name
Yngwie Malmsteen - Baroque and Roll

All these songs are pretty damn sophisticated by the standards of metal (although some, like PMU, are relatively simplistic for band which wrote them) and should go a long way to showing that metal is more then just "growly shit".

I have never been really into power metal, although it has many things I like, like tenor vocalists, good guitar/keyboard melodies and double bass drums. Helloween's Keeper II is pretty awesome though. Eagle Fly Free would be an excellent choice.

Keeper I is far, far better - Halloween alone slays everything on Keeper II. Though I agree that Keeper II would be a little more accessible at first, probably.

Opeth - A Fair Judgement

It's a classic Opeth tune that is a mixture of both mellow and rocking elements, and features no growling.  Plus, it doesn't have anything that some refer to as the cheesy aspects of metal (crazy high vocals, synths, etc.).

That and Twilight of the Gods were pretty much the only songs I really liked. But I should spin it again, sometimes music I have ignored surprises me.

A Tale That Wasn't Right and Future World are pretty cool too. If you find the time, do check it out again.

I'd also like to add that I don't like this topic title, because it implies growls are shitty and unsophisticated which is a terribly ignorant statement to make.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, I mean.. I really don't see how Power Metal for example is more "sophisticated" than Metal with growls.
Also, fuck the word "sophisticated", good music is good music period.
