Updated opinion: Someone Here is Missing is great.  These guys are so precise and melodic and the band has never shown such confidence.

SHIM beats TU for me, which was highly surprising.

Same here, surprised I've come to like SHIM better than TU.

Maybe I should listen to more, but the songs Ive heard sound like Porcupine Tree to me. Can someone direct me to some of their more original work?

The song "Snowdrops" sounds exactly like PT to me, it even has a similar clapping part like Trains!

You might want to try Someone Here is Missing.  I suspect you'll still probably find PT since you want to find it, especially in the heavy guitar parts, but it's probably the album where they've tried some new wrinkles.

I don't really think they sound too similar to Porcupine Tree. In certain tracks they do, but never even for the whole track IMO... anyway, finally listened to Someone Here is Missing a bunch of times and it grew on me a lot (first listen I was like eh). More later!

I've only heard the first half of 'Tightly Unwound', but I'm digging the first track of their new album a lot more (Nothing at Best). I'm all for extra energy and intensity.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

I impulse bought Little Man and am listening now. Pretty good, not quite what I was expecting, and definitely more of a late night with headphones album than a sunny Friday afternoon on speakers one. Still, nice so far.

So Little Man is good, but reminds me more than a little of some PT songs. And is good background music. Not blown away, but not disappointed either.

137 or Abducting the Unicorn.  Really, they haven't changed their sound much so if you liked one you'll probably like any of the rest.

I'd say Tightly Unwound

I'd say Tightly Unwound also.
Really love both that one and SHIM, so a few weeks ago I got the rest of the discography as well.
Haven't checked it out yet, but I have high hopes. :)

Hmmm.

I like Tightly Unwound alright, and SHIM to a lesser extent, but I find neither nearly as interesting as their first three, especially the third one, Variations on a Dream.

Then it's good to know that the first 3 holds a high quality. :D
While I still remember this thread, favorites from the last 2 albums would be 3000 Days and Tightly Wound.  :metal

The Pineapple Thief is one of the few cases where I do think the fan favorite is the best song.

It's in Poland.

I'm pretty disappointed with Riverside anyways, all they have to do is take the ferry from Poland to Sweden, but they still only play in random cities like Krakow etc.

TPT are annoying me.

Well, their PR is, I keep emailing the guy but he never responds which is kinda their loss seeing as I've never seen them covered on any major UK music website and that's what I'm trying to get them.

Still think SHIM is their best by some distance though (not that I've heard the really early stuff).

Update on this and a great example of why I feel sorry for bands.

It's three weeks since I last emailed their press guy and I got no reponse but tonight I emailed the band email address and Bruce got back to me within five minutes...not the first time I've seen that often bands have to organise everything themselves    ::)

I was comparing the last two album closers this morning and it's not even close. I understand what he was going for with "So We Row", the fatality feeling with the repeating riffs, but something is missing here (maybe someone lol). On the other hand, "Too Much To Lose" is sooo well-done! The structure, the creepyness, the way it fades out to nohing but a few noises at a certain point and then comes back again slowly.. It's incredible.

Thoughts? :)

I didn't care for it at first, it just felt unnecessarily long, as if they decided 'Hey, we're progressive right? Let's make a long song!'  But it grew on me a lot. A LOT.

I prefer SHIM to TU.

I've just got into this band recently, and I quite like their older stuff like 137, as well as their latest works. I've been wondering what happened to their older stuff, does someone know why those albums were discontinued?
