I think that "guy next door" aspect of him was a big selling point.

Yeah. I actually think most people thought the opposite of you, Kirk.

W. gave off that "stupid but mold-able" vibe that human nature loves so much.

Most people?  :lol   You mean most conservative people, I think.  Everyone I know who's a democrat thinks he's an idiot, and I think we've kind of got, you know, his legacy backing us up.  When he left office the reputation of the US on the world stage was shit, our economy was in a shambles, and he had an approval rating hovering in the mid 20% range.  I think my assessment of him as an arrogant wad of shit is probably shared by more people than you think.

In 2000 Al Gore won the popular vote (Al fucking Gore! - a guy who's about as charismatic as a bowling ball) and in 2004, Kerry, a guy who everyone here says was "not charismatic enough to be president" got 59 million votes, versus 62 million for Dubya.  Not exactly a landslide for Mr. Affable and he was up against a fucking block of wood fer chrissakes  :lol

I guess if being viewed by most of the planet as spectacularly stupid and incredibly arrogant makes you an "affable guy" then yeah, I'd agree that Bush was an "affable guy"

Well, he was arrogant and stupid, thus many Americans could relate to him.

I thought Dubya was an idiot AND a cool guy.  That's antigoon's point, I think.  I didn't think the man was a good president, but he definitely seemed like a cool guy to hang out with.  I don't know if I would exactly use the word 'charismatic' to describe him, but... he had a certain charm.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

More or less, Jaffa. I said nothing about his intelligence.

I think we need a 2016 election thread now.
Perhaps you should ask bosk to reverse the "e" and "a" in the second half of your user name.

Relatable is the term I would use.

Looking back on this I think you guys are right, my disgust with what he DID as president is clouding my opinion of who he is as a person.  I can't help it.  I think he caused more damage to this country than any president in modern history.  And it's hard to separate the person from the impact he had.

I think we need a 2016 election thread now.

I think that's a good idea. It will be awesome to look back four years down the line and see what predictions came true and which didn't.

Good idea, here's my prediction.

I predict in the end it will come down to a very conservative Republican who is only semi-relateable, and a moderate democrat that the right wingers think of as overly socialist.

The third parties will get a decent internet boost, but will in the end be largely ignored.
