How freaking epic was that m&g, eh? Man, my photos kept coming out blurry for some reason, and I got back in line three times until I got it right. I spoke with their manager about an interview with Chewy, and we're going to arrange it.  He offered to do it tonight, but I just wasn't ready for it - needed to write about 20 questions. But I was so happy to meet the guys! I'm on my way to the show now. Can't wait!!!

Nice to see you at the Meet & Greet Rodrigo. I would have spoken to you more if I had realized who you were.

The boys were so nice, and I got to talk guitar stuff with Chewy. He really is one of the modern greats of guitar.
Also, what a show! :hefdaddy  So energetic and engaging with the crowd. (As opposed to the opening band, which stared at their shoes and the singer had his back to the audience.)
I didn't stick around for "YOB" 'cause I had to drive through a snowstorm.

There's always next time,  man. I'm seeing DT this Thursday, will you be there?

I saw one song from Yob and decided to leave too. Not my cup of tea. It also caught my attention how in tune with the crowd Voivod were...they should have closed the show, and not do this "co-headline" b.s.

New live album coming out this fall and new studio album currently being written to be released next year:

http://agoraphobic-news.com/interviews_view.php?url=interview_with_away_of_voivod_new_album_is_corona_influenced_i_will_turn_the_band_logo_into_covid_19&fbclid=IwAR2CRS7P1ibkXObtyxMXtkSS6HGzkXA3hYcvoIAL3meYEOgrpshTYQ3-jYg

I saw this yesterday.  Great interview.  A live album is WAY overdue and probably should have happened after Nothingface.

I still need to get Phobos.  I remember getting Negatron when it first came out and I just couldn't get into it, so I never bothered with Phobos either.   But years later when I heard it was part of the Voivod story, I listened to it online and fell in love with it.   I kept meaning to pick it up, and it just kept slipping my mind.   But this reminds me that I have to put that on my eBay wishlist as soon as this whole quarantine thing is over.

I agree. Voivod doesn't really have a quality live record yet. They should also record a DVD.

I hope we get the remasters of The Outer Limits and Angel Rat someday..

More Voivod is always welcome.

I gave up waiting for the remasters of the trilogy of Nothingface, Angel Rat and Outer Limits. When the Japan reissues came out a year or two ago I pulled the trigger on those. Cost me $15 a piece. Just glad to finally have them.

With Nothingface and Angel Rat, I went with whatever standard used copy I could find. But with The Outer Limits, I actually decided to plop down a bit more mullah and get a near mint used copy that still had the 3-D glasses in perfect condition. Not sorry about that purchase.

The Warriors of Ice Live release was nice to hear.  The Live in Japan DVD is also worth checking out. Both taken from the period before Target Earth while Blacky was in the lineup along with Chewy.

There's a homecoming video floating around where they did a local show in Quebec and did a bunch of deep cuts....including Jack Luminous.    Wish that had gotten an official release.

I saw them here in Dallas when they played in '93 with Damn the Machine opening (the Poland brother's band). They played a whole bunch of tunes from Outer Limits but did not play Jack Luminous. That was the only letdown IMO. I had no idea that they had ever even played it live as I had assumed that it was not on the setlist for that tour. Met and spoke with Piggy after the show. He was very gracious and humble. I still have the ticket stub which he signed. It stays in my Outer Limits CD booklet (along with the 3D glasses ;))

I knew Van Der Graaf Generator was one of Away's favorite bands, but I was not familiar with their work. Only recently I had the pleasure of going through their 70s output and listening to the album Pawn Hearts I realized that the "you people of this world" section of Jack Luminous is very similar to the 2nd half of 'Man Erg' -- same feel in 5/4 (like a 6/8 + 4/8 = 10/8) and pentameter(?) of vocal delivery. Very cool.

VOIVOD – To release “The End Of Dormancy” EP;

Launch video-clip for “The End Of Dormancy (Metal Section)”!

Canadian progressive sci-fi metal innovators VOIVOD reawaken and return with a 3-track 12” Vinyl and Digital EP entitled “The End Of Dormancy”, to be released on July 10th, 2020 worldwide via Century Media Records.

The EP is centered around a special “Metal Section” version of the title track “The End Of Dormancy” (Off VOIVOD’s latest album “The Wake”) with added trumpets, saxophone and trombones. The complementary tracks on this release are exclusive live versions of “The End Of Dormancy (Metal Section)” and the group’s classic “The Unknown Knows” recorded at Montreal Jazz Fest 2019.

A remarkable video-clip for “The End Of Dormancy (Metal Section)”, directed by Syl Disjonk (who previously created the clip “Kluskap O' Kom” for VOIVOD) and produced by Igor Simonnet, is now available here: https://youtu.be/iv321MReYW4

Yeah, that was amazing!!!! I hope the new album is as good as The Wake. And I'm looking forward to the EP with the "reimagination" of the songs from The Wake as well.

Finally got around to checking this out. Totally fucking killer!!!   :hefdaddy

I think they've taken things to next level with the horns and all. I was skeptical going in, because I generally disdain muzak-y orchestrations of rock music as a rule of thumb, but this was really good! It brings the unique tonality of their music to life in a way I never thought possible.   :eek

I'm expecting this any day now. Very tempted to read your review, but I want to give this release a fair shake without anything to potentially bias my expectations. I will however check out your thoughts after. Keep up the good work!  :metal

OK I've had time to give this new live album a few spins and it doesn't disappoint. A very tight and energetic performance with a good sound mix, but it still sounds raw and not too polished. In the encore you can actually hear the crowd singing "Voivod!" when Snake points the mic at them during the chorus. It's funny and fun. Maybe some shenanigans went down when Dan's guitar cuts out?

@Rodrigo, I just read your Voivod review and I want to say your passion and love for the music really shines through. Excellent writing!

Glad you liked it man!!! One thing I didn't like about the live album was actually pointed out by another reviewer and I didn't want to repeat what he said, but here it is: what's with the fade in and out between songs? This was a "continuous" performance, and I feel like they should have kept the audience noise from one track to the next. But that's a minor complaint. It's a VERY raw performance, even though their precision has increased tenfold through the years.

I interviewed Snake last week, and we're editing his loooong pauses to be able to publish it this week. I'll post it here once it's ready!

So I think you've talked to everyone in the band except Rocky at this point? I met him at a show in Dallas April 2019. Wasn't sure if his English was up to speed. I said "Good show". He said "Thanks" and that was it. And then we just stood there watching the YOB performance.

I interviewed Snake and Away. I was planning something with Dan, but eventually I got involved in other interviews, and ended up not pursuing it. Maybe when the new album comes out. I met all of them at a record store here in Toronto just before their show with Yob, and was amazed at how friendly and grateful they were. Very cool guys!

Snake gave me some insight into what the new album will be like...he said he's feeling kind of down with the whole covid thing, and wants to write something positive this time. We might get the most exotic Voivod album ever, and when it comes to this band, exotic is almost second nature. I can't wait for it!

Exotic as 2nd nature is a great description! If you look at all the phases this band went through each album was a totally unique phase. Probably one of the reasons I'm such a huge fan is I've enjoyed each and every one of these phases. Hell, I'm even a big fan of Angel Rat (I've actually met people who hate that album  :lol ). Also big fan of Phobos too -- just love the way everything came together on that one (I know people have been justly critical of the album's production. Fair enough). I do enjoy the Jason stuff too, but not as much as their proggier fare. At this point, I'm looking forward to whatever they do, especially if its more different or "exotic" as you say. Bring it on!

Thanks for the interview teaser!
