Porcupine Tree VS Opeth VS Dream Theater*
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:53:49 AM »
These are probably easily the three favorite bands of this forum, and if they're not, they're definitely the most comparable on an album to album basis because they each have around the same amount of albums and began writing music around the same time.

Vote for one album per every three slots.

Also, for fun, say what the hardest and easiest rounds for you were.

Personally, choosing between Signify, Still Life, and Scenes was tough. As was choosing between Stupid Dream, BWP, and SDOIT. I had the easiest time with the next round: Lightbulb Sun is just so much better than Deliverance and Train of Thought.

*When Dream and Day Unite has been omitted so that the poll can actually occur.

Cool poll!

1: Orchid is one of my fave Opeth albums, but it isn't a match for I&W.
2. All great, probably my toughest round but went with Morningrise.
3. My Arms, Your Hearse comfortably.
4. Still Life easily.
5. Blackwater Park, though close with Six Degrees.
6. Lightbulb Sun easily.
7. In Absentia, close with Damnation.
8. Ghost Reveries
9. Fear of a Blank planet, pretty close with Watershed.
10. A Dramatic Turn of Events, though close with Heritage.

Dream Theater (6)>Porcupine Tree (3)>Opeth (1): Seeing this result it looks like DT beats the others easily but it's misleading. All three bands battle constantly (among others) for my #1 spot.

 I totally misunderstood the poll and voted for my three favourite albums by each respective artist.

Anyway, my list would go like this:

On The Sunday Of Life / Orchid / Images And Words
Up The Downstair / Morningrise / Awake
The Sky Moves Sideways / My Arms Your Hearse / Falling Into Infinity
Signify / Still Life / Scenes From A Memory
Stupid Dream / Blackwater Park / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Ghost Reveries vs. Deadwing was a bitch of a choice. While Deadwing is one of my favorite PT albums, Ghost Reveries is Opeth at their best for me, so I had to go with that.

PT- 5
Opeth- 3
DT- 2

These are probably easily the three favorite bands of this forum...

Opeth lost to Iron Maiden recently in a Battle of the Bands contest, and I doubt either PT or Opeth are as popular here as Rush and possibly Pink Floyd.  Just saying...;) :)

Oddly enough, all my choices but one are the current majority. The only one where I didn't pick the current poll leader was Octavarium over In Absentia and Damnation and that was probably my toughest choice.

I did consider that Rush is probably the 2nd most popular band at this forum. But, consider it's much harder to stack them up with the other bands due to their number of albums, I decided to stick with PT and Opeth. Plus, PT, DT, and Opeth are all contemporaries of one another, which makes it funner.

Agreed; this is much easier to do.  But I think the results would be more interesting if only those who have heard all of these albums were voting, but you can get that plenty who aren't fans of PT and/or Opeth, and likely haven't heard all of those albums, are voting for all of the DT albums, skewing the results.

On The Sunday Of Life / Orchid / Images And Words
    My favourite album ever
Up The Downstair / Morningrise / Awake
    DT's second best
The Sky Moves Sideways / My Arms Your Hearse / Falling Into Infinity
TSMS is my third favourite PT album, but MAYH is my second favourite Opeth album
Signify / Still Life / Scenes From A Memory
The exact reverse here, Signify is my second favourite PT album, while Still Life is my third favourite Opeth album
Stupid Dream / Blackwater Park / Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
BWP is in my top 5 albums
Lightbulb Sun / Deliverance / Train Of Thought
Don't really care for any of those, but if I have to choose; LBS
In Absentia / Damnation / Octavarium
In Absentia is in my top 5 albums
Deadwing / Ghost Reveries / Systematic Chaos
Ghost Revereis over Deadwing is difficult, they both kick ass. Ghost Reveries has Harlequin Forest though, so it wins
Fear Of A Blank Planet / Watershed / Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Between FOABP and Watershed for me, but gotta give the forst the edge
The Incident / Heritage / A Dramatic Turn Of Events
Well, it's probably the most solid out of those 3

Yeah, but what can ya do? This is a DT forum, so obviously it's going to be skewed either way. This is the life we belong to....

And anyway, some people aren't voting in every tier it seems. Looking at it now, the first tier has a total of 26 votes, while the third only has 19...  :justjen

I would have voted for WDaDU, but ended up with Images, Scenes, Six Degrees, Train of Thought, ADtoE, Up the Downstair, Signify, Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Deadwing. Black Clouds and The Incident narrowly missed the cut.

Edit: And the fact that you cut WDaDU to keep On the Sunday is major fail.

Edit2: Just realized we're supposed to pick our favorite of every trio, will revise.

It's a bit sad to know I've almost entirely cut out DT from my musical life. Still much respect, good memories, learned lessons, but I've got very little want for DT in my current life. PT and Opeth have raped. It was good. Mmhm. With one exception, and the Degrees deserves it. Overall this was very easy.

Here's mine.  After the first two sets, the difference between #1 and #2 were really small:

Images and Words > Orchid > On The Sunday of Life
Awake > Morningrise > Up the Downstair
My Arms Your Hearse > Falling Into Infinity > The Sky Moves Sideways
Scenes From A Memory > Still Life > Signify
Blackwater Park > Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence > Stupid Dream
Deliverance > Train of Thought > Lightbulb Sun
In Absentia > Damnation > Octavarium
Ghost Reveries > Deadwing > Systematic Chaos
Fear of a Blank Planet > Watershed > Black Clouds & Silver Linings
A Dramatic Turn of Events > Heritage > The Incident

Giving each band 3 points for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd I get

Opeth - 24
Dream Theater - 21
Porcupine Tree - 15
Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

Opeth - 5 votes
DT - 4 votes
Porcupine Tree - 1 vote

That was really tough especially the last ones but the first two was DT all the way! Funny enough i was more struggling to choose between PT and Opeth because those 4 DT albums wins over pretty much everything so there were no debate over those!

In Absentia / Damnation
Deadwing / Ghost Reveries
Fear Of A Blank Planet / Watershed

I love all those albums so much so that was really tough!

If I give points to each band the way Big Hath did it, the result is:

DT: 20
PT: 20
Opeth: 20

Looks like the consistency of Opeth's career makes them get as many points as PT and DT in my books!

All DT for me. Can't stand Opeth's harsh vocals and Heritage's vocals bored me, and the only PT album I've really listened to (FOABP) was up against BC&SL which is a good DT album.

Don't listen to PT much , so it was basically Opeth vs DT

Images, easily
Awake, again, easily
My Arms Your Hearse
Still Life, very close (Still Life is my fav Opeth, so have to chose it)
Six Degrees, also close
Train of Thought
Damnation, close
Watershed
A Dramatic Turn of Events
