You not Me  ;D

When people say metropolis do you mean pt1, Pt2 Or both? I'd say learning to live or metropolis pt2

I'm pretty sure that most of the people in this thread have been referring to Metropolis Pt. 1 only, since it's about DT's signature song, not DT's signature album.

Under NO circumstance can you consider the album of Scenes to be one song.

Probably Metropolis pt.1: The Miracle and the Sleeper. But because DT has made many different kinds of songs, not just 10 minutes long songs with tricky instrumental section, it is wrong to pick only one "signature song".

When someone mentions Dream Theater or the Dream Theater sound after I have been away from the band for a while I still go back to "Pull Me Under".  It was the first DT song that I heard and to me it still embodies all of the elements of their signature sound.

Metropolis is unanimous and it makes sense  :metal

Easily Metropolis, because it has the vocals as well. James is an integral part of DT's "signature sound". Otherwise, we have the exact same reaction to Ytse Jam. I hear the words "Dream Theater", and bam, dun dun duuun, dun dun duuun *queue more DUNs*.

Someone who shares the Ytse Jam angle with me!
As I said in my first post for me it's either Ytse Jam or Metropolis, actually it's both. Ytse Jam is song I think could have fitted in any other Dream Theater album, it was their first instrumental and to me their first "That's what we'll be about" statement, an angle that remained solid through out their career; instruments giving the floor to one another back and forth, little wankery here and there and most of all musicianship and instrument command that never declined. It's all about taste and none of this makes Ytse Jam a better song but it's undoubtedly one of the iconic Dream Theater songs and a sure contender for signature song.

Well, initially it was PMU but Metro is probably more representative overall.

That's the second part of my OP question, to most of us fans it's Metropolis but to casual DT listeners from rock and metal fans I think it remains Pull Me Under.
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

A couple of people have hinted at it...but I'm going to go ahead and say it outright.

For me, it's ACoS.   And I actually like Octavarium even more.   But honestly, DT is *defined* in ACoS.

Metropolis

Ytse Jam is a HUGE DT song. Like, it has all of the sounds, minus vocals.

Either the guitar intro of ACoS (which is possibly the most epic intro EVER) or the opening on OVerture 1928.
For me, Overture 1928 sums DT up to a T (minus JLB), as it has all the classic elements. Also, nobody can forget the excitement when that came on at the start of SFAM.

Definitely, but to call it a DT signaure song would go too far imo, it's not 'long' enough, doesn't represent softer parts and most importantly, it doesn't have vocals! Metropolis fits the bill much better, also as a song (songwriting-based) it's probably the best DT has ever done. That starting buildup in the first 3 minutes is nothing short of amazing.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

It's equally defined in Metropolis in less than half the time :)

Mteropolis, because it's probably the #1 fan favourite, but for me, the song that comes to mind is either the last one I listened to, or whichever one I'm currently obsessing over (which is sometimes both).
