The story sounds cool. It's a prequel and he basically becomes the Wizard of Oz or something like that.

I picked that up, basically his version from the time of the Wicked storyline.

Not that that's a bad thing; I'm just sayin'.

I thought this thread was going to be about me.

The idea looks interesting. It looks like they're trying to capture the visual style of the Wizard of Oz, not only with the monochrome sections, but also in the oversaturated colours, and flat artistic backgrounds.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Well duh. I haven't read the book, but seeing how they're capturing some essences from the old movie while its a prequel, is a neat idea. Keeping the way The Emerald City looks, the balloon.

Don't give a shit.

You must not go to movies often then.

Or read Shakespeare.

Or the Bible.

Kinda disappointed I didn't push harder to be a part of this, I almost got in.  Could be neat, but that trailer didn't really do a whole lot, for me anyway.  That's a lot of (very unconvincing) CG to be packed in such a short amount of time.

If you strolled in and said it didn't look interesting, and perhaps gave a reason or two, that would be a different story. "Don't give a shit" is not quite the same. At least, not to me.

And for -  no offense - kind of a silly reason. Nothing you have ever seen in theaters in your entire life is original. I haven't and neither has most anyone in this thread. Every story borrows or adapts from something else.

True as that may be, I'd at least like different characters or a different setting. But, Hollywood has no shame.

Yeah...I'm not feelin' this. Looks like it might suffer a lot from the same things as Tim Burton's "Alice and Wonderland" did.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Well, maybe we should take this to the movie thread? I love Cracked, and that article is great. But, I mean, look at a Tarantino movie. I watched Inglorious Basterds (again) last night and it was captivating. Why? Well, the story was familiar (essentially a spaghetti western version of Valkyrie/kill the evil bad guy), but the characters were fresh and interesting.

The characters weren't original; the way they were portrayed was. You think that's the only American corporal in a film, or even a story, that claims to have Indian blood and to fight like one? And that's certainly not the only story about super Jews beating the crap out of people who beat them down. There are entire comic series about those kinds of guys.

I said they were "fresh and interesting", not new. It's like Thor (2011). I actually really enjoyed that movie. It's not a new idea, or a new story. In fact, the story has been done probably more times than not. It's damn near every James Bond story. However, they handled the characters in such a way that it felt compelling to watch. They didn't go overboard with the "fish out of water" part when Thor gets to Earth. They showed a few differences, but Thor adapted quickly. Why? Because he's the motherfucking God of Thunder, not an idiot.

I thought Tarantino would be a good place to cite where you can find something new and fun in a familiar story, because he uses the same stories he saw as a kid. But, he's smart enough as a writer/director/filmmaker to add elements to keep the story intriguing and, well, fresh. I don't mind the use of the familiar elements, but the fact that a lot of these movies are reboots and flat out remakes is frustrating. We may not have all seen Wicked, but we all probably know what it is. So why does this movie need to be made? Oh yeah, take two famous actors (Franco/Kunis) and a familiar name and it'll sell.

Why does this movie need to be made?  Oh because it provides a nice backdrop and backstory to the land of Oz.  Franco and Kunis are great actors anyways.
