The part that signals that it is over
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I'd have to say that Solitary Shell is my favorite part of SDoIT. The keyboard melody that Jordan plays before each verse... It just really brings me back to my childhood. Every time I hear it, I feel like a little kid back at my grandmas house, watching Spongebob and playing superheroes with my cousins

Not to mention the absolutely BEAUTIFUL piano solo towards the end of the track. This is one of my favorite DT songs of all time.  :tup

I'll go with About to Crash reprise.... what an emotionally powerful piece!!  (Especially the Score version w/ Orch.)  Sends shivers down my spine just thinking about it.

War Inside My Head - short but sweet.

I think War Inside My Head is very underrated. I just wish there was a "single" version of it so that it wasn't just wedged between two other songs, having no proper beginning and no proper ending.

How is this not everyone's favorite part?

Now I always listen to SDOIT as one whole 45 minute thingy, so I'm not dissing any of the other parts.  In fact I love them all, just like everyone says.  But this is the part that makes you go Fuck Yeah.  The whole build up from the end of About to Crash (Much to her advantage...) through the beginning of Test That Stumped Them All is perfection to the note.

Yes, at its core, Six Degrees should be listened to all the way through. But sometimes I either don't have the time to do that, or I just don't feel like doing that. And in those cases, there are certain parts of Six Degrees that you can listen to by themselves. Like Solitary Shell or Test That Stumped Them All are both available as a "Single Edit" from the greatest hit compilation. And even About To Crash reprise has a concrete beginning that you can start with and just listen all the way to the end.
But that's not the case with War Inside My Head, which basically means that on my playlist, it's never, ever going to get quite as many listens as the other ones I mentioned. Which is a damn shame.

About to Crash. It's magical. But Goodnight Kiss has JP's best solo.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. The part that signals that it is over

Fully agree. This CD gets very little rotation in my playlist.  But I am glad i saw the first ever live performance of it.  James badly muffed the second verse in About to Crash, but the band kept it together nicely.

is this called hazing a new guy? :)

you don't just call every musical composition a song.  for example, classical instrumental pieces can be songs, or preludes, etudes, intermezzos, sonatas, concertos, tone poems, movements, symphonies, etc.

SDOIT is not a song.  it's a thing.

Musical symmantics arguements never get anywhere. Plus, the only subject worse than what constitutes a song is what constitutes a concept album.

No, dude, it's a song. That's what the band says it is. And thanks for the vocab lesson, but I, like many on this board, have had training in music theory.

I feel like this argument might get somewhere. I mean, this guy is trying to convince me that the proper categorization for SDOIT is not "song" but "thing". :lol

I'm going to play some devil's advocate her.

That's what the band says it is.

An arguement could be made that the band doesn't have the final say in it's categorization. Philip Glass doesn't call his music minimalist, but obviously the rest of world says otherwise. That's just one example of the common truth that users own more of a name than the creators.

"Minimalist" is a genre of music, not a musical form. When it comes to form, you can trust the composer to accurately categorize his own works, be they symphonies, concertos, songs, etc.

So I'm learning about the personalities on the forum as I go along.  Apparently theseoafs is the one with the bad attitude who is also a bit arrogant, but at the same time doesn't understand when people are tryring to be a bit facetious and bring some levity.

I would say I was being the opposite of pedantic.  Really, you had to come in and set me straight when I used the word "thingy"?  As if you thought I needed to be informed?

Come on, now.  I think, given what forum we're on, we should all give each other the benefit of the doubt when it comes to our musical knowledge.  I replied as such because you didn't accord that benefit to me, which since I'm new is fine, but I'm letting you know you should.

Yeah, I'll second the fact that Mr. Seoafs is a cool cat.  He can rub you the wrong way at first, but after you've been around a bit and get used to his style, you can't help but like 'im.

Six Degress is a song.  But it gets confusing for a number of reasons.  First off, it's over 40 minutes long.  There aren't a lot of songs you can say that about.  Second, each of the movements is about the length and structure of a more traditional song.  And to compound the issue, the band has played individual movements as standalone songs in concerts, and has created edits of two of them so they can be played as individual songs.  So, yeah, there are a lot of good reasons to not think of it as a single song composed of many movements, even though it is.  At the end of the day, if someone subjectively wants to consider it a suite or a a group of songs, or something else, it doesn't really matter.  And I don't think anyone in the band really cares either.  I think they're just happy that it is a piece of music they are proud of, that a lot of fans like, and that fans talk about.
