I think the problem for England is that the journalists themselves think that it's the best country in the world. Just because you have the best league doesn't make the international team the best.

The journalists in Britain are possibly the worst around for build-em-up-to-knock-em-down journalism.
England's usual soccer modus operandi is to scrape through the pool stages, usually due to someone else's failure rather than any magic on their own part, followed by heroic defeat to some country that's quite good.

I prefer rugby...  :yarr

The UK media and journalism sucks at pretty much everything, but yeah this is true. The media and parts of the public seem insistant that we are (or should be) a great team, when we are not and never have been. We're decent, maybe even good, but we're not great. But all the media attention and obsession puts the team under so much pressure that they end up making mistakes.

Nice to see us win for a change though!

It's quite funny here how so many people blame Ibrahimovic for Sweden playing badly.  :lol He's only our biggest star by miles, so blame him, don't blame the other 10 players who play in inferior teams.
It's sad really. A few years ago we had a much better team that could fight better, apart from Ibrahimovic we also had Henrik Larsson, Ljungberg and a few other players like Mellberg and Anders Svensson were much better back then. We don't really have that many good players in the best leagues, having players in the Dutch league or in Greece, that doesn't scare anybody.

Good tournament so far, but I'm sad because of the Netherlands underperforming in this Euro since I always root for them. I don't really know why they're losing but I think some factors like Robben being completely individualistic and not as good as in past years, the fact that the only good players in the defense right now are Van der Wiel and Willems (Whatever happened to Heitinga?) and that the midfield seems very lost can influence the result's they're getting. They're ad portas of being eliminated and it's kind of disappointing for me :(

Even though I'm Greek, I believe that Russia will easily defeat us today with at least two goals.

I know Dutch supporters like to do it with the lyrics "Alle Duitsers zijn homo" (all Germans are gay) but for the rest, no idea.

Can somebody explain to me why Greece is in the quarter-finals, even though Russia has be a better goal difference than Greece? Is it because Greece won the direct game between the two or something?

Sorry for the double post, btw.

From what I've heard, if two teams end up on the same points for the second spot, it's decided by somehow removing the results of the winning team in the group (so only counting the games between the other teams), I'm not 100% sure how it works, but if so then all results/games against Czech Republic would go out of the equation, and the table would look differently.

No, it's the difference in that exact game. So Greece is second because they won against Russia.

Ah okay, what I had suspected, but nice to see it confirmed. When did they abandon the policy of going by the goal difference in cases like these?

If it's just two teams going for the same spot, they take the match that was played between them If it's three teams, they go on goal difference.

I really excited for tnight, in fact this second scenario could very well happen. If Germany beats Denmark and the Netherlands beats Portugal, the last three teams will have the exact same number of points (3) and then it goes on goal difference in all matches Germany wasn't involved in to see who goes through. In this particular case, for the Netherlands to go through, they'll need Germany to win and they need to win with at least two goals difference from Portugal.

I'd... actually be okay with that. As long as Germany is through I'm happy... isn't there an equally wacky scenario which could lead to us not going through despite having two wins already?

Yeah, both Denmark and Portugal winning, scoring enough goals in the run (not sure on the exact number).

Another quality gme (Holland Portugal).

At least Holland got in the final in 2010.. england last reached a semi final in 1996, and that was only really becase it was on home turf, sigh.. However I have a much better feeling for England than before the tournament started. But if we meet Spain in the quarters I guess it's game over..

They should yes and I suppose Italy will win against Ireland, but I'm guessing Croatia will make it very tough for Spain. I think that one will be a 1-1 draw, sending both teams through if Italy doesn't score enough goals.
