I'm not surprised at all.  Like I said a few posts above, people freak out for all kinds of reasons.  It's a real shame they had to shoot him, since it'd be kind of helpful to know what caused him to go off his nut.  By all accounts he was a pretty sane guy, and acting quite normal beforehand.

Reminds me of a recent incident with a body-builder and pornstar.  He went increasingly loony until his GF called the paramedics saying she was concerned he was suicidal.  He was reasonably calm until they got him into the meat-wagon and put him in restraints.  At that point he had a panic attack and ripped the handcuffs off of the gurney.  Johnny's natural inclination was to tazer him repeatedly until he had a heart attack and died.  In his case it was a Michael Jackson level of insomnia that caused him to freak.  I wonder if something similar wasn't going on with this guy.  Stress and anxiety lead to loss of sleep, which leads to delusional behavior, which leads to death by cop.

The media has once again jumped on a feeding frenzy, blaming "bath salts" for every example of bizarre behavior they have found with no evidence to back it up. I used the pure form of the drug contained in bath salts every day for 2 years straight and the worst I got were (admittedly quite crippling) panic attacks. I'm glad I don't do them anymore, but I also know that their media reputation is ridiculous and reminiscent of every historical drug-related feeding frenzy from marijuana causing "reefer madness" to cocaine causing "crack babies" to ecstasy putting "holes in your brain"--they have all been bullshit, and so is this. Over-the-top stories about the exaggerated dangers of the latest drug crazes among youth sell; thus, they will never go away until people stop believing them.

You left out blue star acid.  Cops are really one of the biggest culprits.  Those guys are awful once they start gossiping.  One cop hears a story, sends a fax, and next thing you know it's a nation-wide hysteria.  I'd be willing to bet Johhny's the one behind this cannibalism thing.

Which compound might this be?

What I've read is that the stimulant type mixed with the hallucenogenic type is what can cause the zombie madness.

While we've learned that the bath salts didn't cause Rudy to devour that poor man's face, what we can infer is that the refer madness was the actual cause.

Pot is the gateway drug to cannibalism.
