Just watched The Thief and the Cobbler, the fabled Aladdin-esque epic that never happened. What a beautifully rendered film.

If it never happened, how did you watch it?
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

It's this thing called the "Recobbled Cut," so it's got fully animated and polished scenes but also some sketches and storyboards and things.

:P

And sure, it's not perfect, but the parts that are finished look absolutely spectacular.

I've never understood the love that movie gets.

It's incredibly unremarkable except when Chris Tucker shows up, then it's almost awful.

Plus, it also features my least favorite Gary Oldman performance ever.  That means he's just good and not amazing.

It's set in the future, but not a Utopian future, nor a post-Armageddon future.  It's a bizarre, twisted future.  Certain sci-fi concepts are taken to weird extremes, other things are pretty much like present day.  It helps to think of the whole thing as a satire, which it is, but somehow it has a real message to it.  Meanwhile, every character is a caricature.

You know what?  It's not for everyone, and explaining it probably doesn't do any good.  A lot of people really love it, including me.  Some don't.  Chris Tucker is pretty damned annoying, I'll give you that.  After a couple of times, though, I've actually gotten to where I can half tune him out, and laugh at him the rest of the time.

I dunno. Personally, growing up with that movie has led to Tucker's character being one of my favorites. :lol He's just so ridiculous and over-the-top that it really makes complete the fact that this is '90s sci-fi. It's like he's the element that really pegs it as such.

Maybe that's the part that doesn't quite work for me.  I don't want to be reminded that it's 90's sci-fi.  I generally don't want anything in a movie that dates it at all.  A good story is a good story; a good character is a good character.  This probably contradicts the idea that this is a parody and Ruby Rhod is a caricature of a video/radio personality gone mad.  But like I said, I've gotten to where I can laugh at him.  He's not nearly as annoying as he used to be.  But when he's screaming like a girl, as funny as that is, I was really hoping he'd get blown up or shot or something.

Just saw the new Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom. It was a really great film, and I would highly recommend all you fools go see it.
I want to see this. I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD though. Doesn't seem like a movie that really has to be seen on the big screen.

So it finally opened about a half hour away from me so I went to see it this afternoon. Very uncomfortable at certain times (the ear rings come to mind), and replete with Wes-style humor. What really gets me about it is that it really does feel like a view of real life, more than suspending your disbelief for a film, which makes the latter much easier.

I will say this: it doesn't have to be on the big screen, but for the hurricane scenes it definitely enhances and heightens the dramatic tension.

In unrelated news, Hyde Park on Hudson looks good but like Oscar bait. Although I'm sure that's a no-brainer for anyone here who's seen the trailer.

Hyde Park looks good, but Argo looks even better in my opinion. That Ben Affleck guy is a talented director.

Ruby Rhod was definitely The Fifth Element's Jar-Jar.

Saw Iron Sky

Don't know how to properly numerically rate.

95% of the movie was unequivocally brilliant.

But the other 5% left a bad taste in my mouth.
Agreed.

I'm watching Titanic right now, and I really, really don't understand any of the hype. In fact I think it sucks. Maybe the story wasn't a cliche then but it sure is now, and some of the "historic" dialogue by some of the characters on the Titanic make me :orly: more than they should.

Oh, well then the reasons for its success are that much more bewildering. Unless it is true that around then, the story wasn't a cliche as it is now.

It's not just you. The overwhelming success of Titanic is something that has never made sense.
