The Eurovision thread
« on: May 26, 2012, 08:39:00 AM »
It's that time of the year again! Anybody watching it? I'm having people come over and we're combining it with BBQ (high 80s today in Boston!)

Poor suckers in Azerbaijan, where it's being hosted. Because the whole thing centers around CET, for them it starts at midnight :lol

I can't think of a much worse Saturday evening than spending it sat in front of the bloody Eurovision song contest....

Each to their own though....

From what I've heard, Sweden is one of the favorites. I probably wont watch it though, but I'll be rooting for Sweden obviously.  :hat

I watched both the semis, and can't wait to see the final. First semi was amazing, second one sucked except for the rock dude from Slovakia (although the song was generic metal, and the vocalist was pitchy as hell).

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Would I watch it sober in front of a TV? Hell no. Would I watch it with friends, next to a grill with beer in my hand? Hell yeah!

@Blob, either you're the master of sarcasm, or you have to explain to me why an Aussie would watch the semis of Eurovision :lol

Why not?! To me the appeal of Eurovision is the awfulness of the entries, and seeing a bunch of people get on stage with fake plastic instruments, and pretend to perform terrible electro-dance tunes that incorporate some horrible traditional musical element of their own country, along with an outdated sense of what popular music is.
By the time you get to the final, you've already culled a lot of the hilariously bad ones.

PS, I'm not sure if they got through to the final, but there was a gem in the first semi. It was a generic dance/pop tune, with some flaky girl out front singing and dancing, with a few backup male dancers. Eurovision has a rule about the vocals needing to be live, so there was actually another girl at the very edge of the stage, not moving at all, in complete darkness and hiding, serving no purpose but to double the vocals with her so they sounded in pitch. You could only spot her briefly in the wide shots, but not a sign of her in any of the closeups. That is gold. :lol

I don't know why Finland picked that song, it wasn't bad in my opinion but it didn't fit Eurovision at all.

I don't know other countries very well but from what I heard before Sweden is great. I think, we, as Turkey hopefully will be on the top 5. I love our song or show.

In the Eurovision criterions Sweden deserved to win, their song was written for this but out of these criterions the song sucks! We have this kind of songs everytime, especially in the summer, playing everywhere. Nothing special, plain and simple. That's all.

Totally agree, but when have ever originality won in the Eurovision contest?  :lol

I heard Euphoria on the radio before i knew it was in the contest....and i liked it, nothing new or special just a good song with a nice atmospheric soundtrack!

Yes! Euphoria really did deserve to win. And yeah Italy hates us, only country not to give us any points.

And I can barely speak from all the scream that took place last night watching this. I'm not really into this but when you've got parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends screaming it's always fun to tag along.

Why does Italy hate us?

I think Euphoria is a really good track that gets stuck in your head all too easy.

They did enter in 2010. They didn't even make it to the finals though.

They actually expected to win with that song? Bored me to tears, and probably a lot of other people too.

It's a beautiful song, but the problem is that people want more "pop"-music in Eurovision, and I think Pain of Salvation would have made it further with another song. Road Salt is great, but it kinda takes a few spins to get into, and maybe a more "rocking" tune would have gotten people's attention more.

Euphoria is probably my favorite Swedish winning-song together with Waterloo, we've won 5 times I believe, not sure how many countries have won more, but isn't Ireland up there? (I thought of them for some reason, might be another country)
