My dog is dying
« on: May 21, 2012, 04:00:14 AM »
This sucks.  On Saturday, my dog was his normal, energetic, playful self.  Yesterday, he came home limping, putting no weight on his left front paw.  We saw no obvious signs of trauma (abrasions, cuts, blood), and we took him to the animal hospital.  Turns out he has cancerous tumors, and they are actually in both front legs, although he was only manifesting discomfort in one of them.  He is going to die.  It is only a matter of when.

This is awful, just awful.  We are devastated.  He has been such a good dog.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Knowing that a pet is going to die is one of the most awful things I ever went through.  I understand your pain, it's not easy at all.

Looks like it will be today, after all.  He is refusing food and water, and we can't give him his pain meds without them.

I love him so much.

This is just terrible.

Dude hef I'm so sorry :(
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

So, so, so, so sorry. I really don't know what to say as I don't know what I would want to hear were I in your shoes.

I want to share this, which is probably something you have seen before, but it might give you a little warmth in this time of grief (Fuck, even just typing this makes me tear up, it's by an unknown author, to my knowledge.):

"Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,

”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

I don't have a pet, but I can imagine that losing one is like a close friend dying. But he goes to the dog heaven. I hope you and your family strength to deal with the sorrow.

Shit... That's tough. I've been through three deaths of a family dog, all very loving, protecting, wonderful friends and it's hard every time; as you said, more so for the kids (or in my case younger sisters). All lost to cancer as well. I feel for you; I'm really sorry to hear that Hef. Here's hoping he goes peacefully and surrounded with love.  :'( :heart

It's over.  We had him put to sleep.

His name was Bear.  Actually, now that I think about it, his full name on his AKC paperwork was HefDaddy's Grizzly Bear.  But to us he was just Bear.  He was a cocker spaniel, and the best dog I've ever had.

RIP Bear.  No more pain.

I remember when my dog died back in 2006. It was a sad time. I remember my brother and mom went to the vet with her as we knew her energy was gone, she was just laying on the couch. I stayed back because I didn't want to face it. A few hours later my mom called and said my cousin was coming over to pick me up and bring me to the vet. The vet was 20 minutes away. A few minutes after I got there, I pet her one last time and quietly and without the use of drugs to put her down, she closed her eyes and moved onto the next life. She waited for me to get there. Walking out of the Vet that night, it started to snow. It wasn't in the forecast that day, but the snow was my dog letting me know she was in a better place.

Here are some poems that are well-done and are comforting in a way. RIP to your dog.

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.

I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,

You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.

I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.

I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.

I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.

I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.

To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...

In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning

and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,

I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.

The Rainbow Bridge
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross the rainbow bridge together.
God have mercy on a man
Who doubts what he's sure of.
-Bruce Springsteen
