If I was to make a list like this, as much as I like the show from the beginning up to around season 16, I think my list would be mostly seasons 6-9. Those were the seasons which came out when I was about 8-12 years old, and the point at which I really began to appreciate the show as something greater than everything else I was watching. On top of that, I think those seasons hit me at just the right point of my childhood to actually contribute significantly in shaping my sense of humour, so when I return to those seasons, the tone of the show continues to strike the perfect chord with me.

My two default answers for favourite episode are the Frank Grimes one (late season 8) and Homer Simpson vs. New York (early season 9). I don't know my way around the seasons that well, but just glancing at a list of episode names in 6-9, I immediately recognise as brilliant ones that would be in contention for my Top 20: You Only Move Twice, King Size Homer, Hurricane Neddy, Homer the Smithers, Lisa the Iconoclast, Mountain of Madness, Bart Carny, Bart's Comet, Homie the Clown, Bart vs. Australia, Lemon of Troy, Summer of 4 Ft 2... you get my point.

A few favourites outside that period (again, just browsing episode titles and going on instant feelings towards the episodes) are Bart’s Dog Gets an F, Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie, Rosebud, Treehouse of Horror V (the Shinning one), E I E I D’oh, and my late inclusion would have to be Don’t Fear the Roofer.

1.  A Fish Called Selma s07e19

Louie: Hey, I thought you said Troy McClure was dead?
Fat Tony:  No, I said he sleeps with the fishes.

Really a perfect episode.  Great story. Great jokes.  Can't find anything at all to not like about it.  Moreover, it's Phil Hartman's best work, which is saying a helluva lot.  Only seems fitting that an episode centered around Troy McClure tops the list.

My very favorite episode as well!  The only one where Troy is the main character.  It is hysterical from front to back.

I was honestly expecting 22 Short Films to be number 1. BUt you picked my favorite Troy McClure episode instead. Equally as good.

Great list!

Interesting pick for number 1, I would have never guessed it.  Wouldn't rank it anywhere near that high myself.  The Planet of the Apes scene is classic though.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

The Apes musical is definitely a Simpsons highlight. Phil Hartman was hilarious.

Awesome choice for number 1. Probably my 2nd favourite just behind Lise the Vegetarian.

Wow, that's quite a surprise! Still a great episode, though.

This list reminded me how I haven't watched The Simpsons in quite while, time to find some oldschool VHS tapes.  ;D

Lisa the Vegetarian probably should have gotten an honorable mention.  I was never real crazy about the McCartney's at the end, but before that it's an awesome episode.  The meat council film is one of the show's highlights.

I don't particularly like them being in there either, or what it did for Lisa's character, turning from a smart brainiac into just a dirty hippy, but the rest of the episode is just so damn good that I can overlook it.
The meat council video is perfect, and the entire surrounding school scenes are gold. I feel like quoting highlights, but I'd near literally just be quoting the entire script. :lol

Ravenheart beat you to it.  That was my second choice for the quote, though.

If anybody's not aware, the quote I used was probably the highlight of the episode, and wound up being one of the two syndication cuts.  Sadly, those guys occasionally fuck things up terribly when deciding what to edit out for syndication time constraints.  Some great jokes wind up on the floor, including that one.  Figure plenty of people here haven't actually seen that bit, unfortunately.

The meat council film is one of the show's highlights.

It's not really a floor, it's more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported.
