I watched Men in Black 2 for the first time since seeing it in theatres last night, and some of the CGI wasn't so flash to watch today. Granted, it is often supposed to be cartoony - for example, Jeebs' regenerating head and Frank the pug, which were both still cool - but a lot of it was still quite poor. In particular, the main villain's CGI was bad, and the ship landing at the beginning was terrible.

Makes me wonder how MIB1 would fare nowadays, although I recall that being far less CGI-reliant (the main villain was completely make-up until the last scene, right?)

I also remember being appalled by Congo when I saw it (for the first time) about five years ago. If I'm right though, that came out around the time of Jurassic Park, and the SFX got quite a bit of criticism even at the time.

Lol Last time I watched MIB2 and had the same thoughts :lol
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing. But those movies are terrible anyway. You'd think a movie with a bigger budget would look better, but the first Mummy looks so much better. Also, I think it's awesome that Jurassic Park still looks amazing and real (when the T. Rex first escapes, that's a real fucking dinosaur) and these newer movies with bigger budgets look fake as hell. Avatar I'm looking at you.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I recall MIB1 looking not that bad, but I wasn't all that blown away by it when it came out.

Though not a movie, Babylon 5's special effects look really dated now, but once again, I wasn't all that impressed with them at the time.

Some of the army shots in LotR look really blatantly like CGI now. It's not enough to make the movies look dated, since there are very few extended CGI shots, but it is noticeable.  The Balrog still looks like a motherfucker though.

In general, I think good prosthetics/make-up/muppets/models will always age better than good CGI.  Todays good CGI will just be tomorrows bad CGI.

The Special Edition Star Wars movies and The Lion, Witch And The Wardrobe (original). The Aslan flight sequences are putrid.

Jurassic Park 3, however...

1998 Godzilla
YES. The funny thing is, I originally saw this at a friends' house and remember his dad saying, "the things they can do with special effects these days is incredible". Saw a good chunk of it again on TV a few years ago and I couldn't believe how bad some scenes are.

The last fight in "Blade."

To be fair - the CGI in that film looked *awful* when it was released.
