and the History channel might get pissed at the copyright infringement.

Agreed, if DT selected this video or any other with copyright infringement, then DT could be liable for damages.  Even though they will most likely have a waiver that protects the band, they can still be sued.

It says the winner gets $1 for his/her efforts then is owed no further money and DT can use all of part of that video from then on for whatever they want :P

I know that seeing your video at every DT gig for that song would be cool but that does sound a bit stingy.

The $1 contract is not stingy since this is afterall a contest and not a paid work for hire.  However, US law requires that any transaction involving owernship must be a assigned a dollar value, so the $1 payment is so the band can legally own the video and do whatever they want with it.   Even though the band is getting the video for free, they technically have to pay $1 for the rights.

If you wanted to, you could argue that DT is being stingy by farming this out as a contest rather than producing the video on their own penny.  The winning video (and possibhly runners up) will likely be featured on an upcoming DVD release, which may make it a more attractive product.  DT is acquiring bonus content without having to pay for the rights (or pay the hefty production costs of creating their own music video), and this content could be used in a DVD product which will no doubt generate revenue for the band.

But as i said, it is, afterall, a contest . . . the DT community gets a positive interaction with the band, and DT gets a music video free of charge.

All of the video responses are just ripping off movies and television shows. If only I knew how to generate 3D images or if I had a camera, I'd probably take a crack at this.

I thought he wasn't doing it because of the time given that's much too short. Did I miss something?

I did the 7 minute Erotomania video in exactly one month somehow, but 10 minutes in 3 weeks? Not a chance. :lol
I never do whole songs though, usually just a minute or so for each song. Do me proud DTF! I want someone from here to win it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC3y9llDXuM&feature=share Dream Theater just posted an entry on their facebook page also saying there is only a few days left. Looks like a decent one for sure

Not sure if trolling.. You copied the wrong URL. Here is the one you probably wanted to post:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63oZONexTJE

They posted another one:

The second one has got some great fractals, really amazing. But I doubt it will be chosen because it's only fractals and scenes from the OTBOA video clip.

^ That's really good, but as previously discussed in another thread, it uses material from multiple copyrighted movies and TV shows.

It is interesting how many of these videos include live footage of the band.  I would think this to be a mistake and greatly hurts the submission's chances, since the video is to intended to serve as a visual compliment to the band as they perform live.  Makes no sense to have the live footage in this context, as it would be amateur for the band to perform in front of clips of themselves (clearly taken from other songs).

I would expect the winning video not to have any live band clips, unless DT edits it so that all band footage is taken directly from the live feed as they perform.

A great live example of this is Hollow Years.  In live shows, they show the actors scenes but cut away to the live feed during the parts of the official video that shows the band members (walking aimlessly in Toronto as it happens).  It is common sense not to have Jordon playing a song with Derek on a big screen behind him.

I was thinking the same thing.  Well put.  I don't think common sense is common anymore.

Surprised not to have seen this one linked...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C7U0hroSoY

Pretty much perfect, by my buck. It's abstract but interesting, relates to the song but doesn't batter you over the head with it, matches pace with the song note for note, striking but not distracting... and it looks a hell of a lot more professional than most of the entries! No pixellated cartoons floating about, no copyrighted images - just a slick, well-executed video.

While I love the range of different approaches, the level of talent on display - everyone's produced great stuff, head and shoulders above anything I'd be able to produce, I'd be like a chimpanzee learning to use tools - this is, I reckon, the only one that matches the quality of their existing live videos. Most don't quite match up.

Nice work. I liked a few others better, but considering the copyright issue and the limited amount of time, this video is very good.

Would have preferred either of the animated ones but it does have good effects and is nicely syncronised, so I can see why it won.

The winning video will work weli na live setting -- lots of flashing effects behind the band.  Could be intense. So PLEASED they did not select a lyric video.

Watched a few of the other videos besides the winner, and this one will definitely work the best. It's simple yet effective. They probably didn't want something so crazy in the background that it distracted from the actual band performing. It will definitely do its job well

Kind of an odd contest.  This type of thing is so abstract.  I guess the one they went for is probably the best one.  I agree it will translate pretty awesome at the actual show.

I only watched the first couple of minutes, and I'd say they were definitely very thoughtful about choosing one that didn't violate copyrights, or show live footage, and maybe they didn't want any using Mika's characters either.
Even though this video was the most abstract of the submissions I've seen via DT's FB, it actually looks the most appropriate for a legit addition to their live show without screaming out "made by a fan for a contest".
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.

The first chorus (3:45) is epic! There are some moments through the video which look a bit random to me and I think that maybe at these moments,it will show the members from the stage playing. But the first chorus is perfectly done!

That was pretty cool and as many say they probably choose it because it would work good live! Now i wonder if they will sync it so they play together with the video? The video will loose alot of it´s effect if they don´t!
