Haken (prog metal) Have their first album, a bit quirky, but the song Celestial Elixir (with or without the circus music) is a masterpiece
Riverside (prog metal) They were decent from what I heard, but I still need to listen further

Try out Haken's new album Visions...there are no growls, and no ragtime circus stuff.  Really, really solid album you'll probably enjoy.

And you should definitely give Riverside another listen.  They have a darker feel and mood to their music, with less shredding and more melody and rhythm...overall a very unique sound. Second Life Syndrome is one of my favorite albums ever, and a great place to start with Riverside.

Maybe try giving Wolverine a listen too?  I really enjoyed their past two albums Communication Lost and Still.  The vocalist is fantastic and they have a knack for writing great melodies.

If you're looking for something very original I recommend Paynes Gray. They released one EP and one full length album: Kadath Decoded. This album was released in 1995 and is a concept album based on a HP Lovecraft novel. It's worth chasing down if you can get hold of it. Laser's Edge ocassionaly stock it and you could probably get hold of it hthrough Doug Larson imports as well.Meanwhile check out these tracks:

Typed Sirenia into the search box, and this old thread popped up. Turns out Adace recommended them to me and I said this:

Sirenia (female-fronted symphonic metal) "Heard of 'em, will look into"

Well, I had heard of them, but I heard they were the beauty and the beast type band. I also only just now got around to checking them out lol, but Nine Destinies and a Downfall is great. Minimal growls, and they don't bother me. Unfortunately they don't have the same singer anymore, but the new chick sounds pretty good. Gonna give the next album a shot tonight.

I'm still looking for new stuff (who isn't) and my current pursuit is stuff like this Sirenia album. Pop metal "gothic" style with non operatic female vocals. Kinda like Amaranthe, but without growls.

Thanks again for those who suggested me stuff a year ago.... Damn, time flies.

I was going to suggest Masterplan, but then I noticed Wolfking already mentioned them. I'll suggest them anyway. The song "Crimson Rider" is a good place to start.

Btw, google Jørn(Jorn) Lande if you like the vocals in "Crimson Rider". He's been in a whole lot of bands during the years, check out "Burn the Sun" by ARK if you haven't already.

If it's chick's you're looking for like Elize and Manda, try anything with Magali Luyten - Beautiful Sin, Virus IV, and she plays a big role in Epysode (along with Liselotte Hegt - K. Gildenlow's wife).

After that, Xandria (borderline operatic, but not like early Nightwish, more like Annette-era Nightwish).
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

I could be wrong Zook but I think this might be something along the right path.... by far one of my favorite recent female vocalists. Here's a couple from her with Jeff Loomis...

Jeff Loomis ft. Christine Rhoades, "Tragedy And Harmony" - https://youtu.be/sFbXyCbBSYM

Jeff Loomis ft. Christine Rhoades, "Chosen Time" - https://youtu.be/0NLATyO2s8M

She also has two others off that album "Collide" and "Reverie for Eternity" but I haven't heard them yet as I got the initial release and those were on later limited edition of the cd but the songs are up on youtube as well. I'm just waiting to get the limited edition cd.

Anyhow... check it out... maybe it's something you'd have interest in.

Thanks guys. I think the last time I heard Beautiful Sin I was still in Florida.... I think. I'll look into your suggestions. :tup

Oh yeah, I've tried getting into Jorn, but his solo stuff deosn't interest me a whole lot. I like his guest stuff like in Ayreon's 101011010101010101010111110001010101010001, and Avantasia, and Masterplan isn't so bad.

Try Ark's Burn the Sun, killer Jorn record.  You might like the Allen/Lande albums too.  There are more melodic rock like The Magnificent.
