I'd already thrown up at #100.

EDIT: Okay, definitely a troll. Now it's awesome. :rollin

If you actually read the first two paragraphs, I don't see what's so controversial about this list. It lays out their criteria pretty clearly, and the list adheres to it.

I literally stopped the second I saw 100. What the hell is a SPIN magazine anyway? Exactly.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

A magazine that spins really fast, like in the movies.

Do you know how many people get injured or fatally wounded by papercuts due to spinning papers each year? They're clearly an irresponsible magazine, and thus their list cannot be trusted.

Was gonna post this.  I actually haven't heard of 75% of these guitarists and have been playing for like 16 years, but what the description says the list is going to do, it does.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Yeah, had I not read the intro paragraphs, I'd have gotten stabby REAL quick, but given that, I didn't bother even looking at the rest of it.

Even given the intro I don't see how that justifies putting on people who don't actually play guitar.

This.

Honestly, I think the way music fans and media try and create this really sharp divide in guitar playing, for lack of a better word, (easy/slow stuff with emotion vs. technical fast stuff like a robot) is really stupid.  Technicality doesn't mean you throw emotion out the window.  Yes its true that restraint helps you sometimes, but that doesn't mean guitarists like Petrucci should be considered "robots" for being able to play a billion notes a second.  There's great stuff in both camps, and its totally possible to be technically skilled while still conveying a lot of emotion, and to be less skilled but play without feeling.  "Comfortably Numb" proves that without a doubt.

A guy from Run-DMC in the top 10?  Holy fucking lol.  I didn't look at the whole list, but I'm going to guess that Tupac is probably in there somewhere.  Why not throw in Fatboy Slim, Snoop Dog, and Dr. Dre in there as well.  Fuck, let all of N.W.A. in.  And Lady Gaga.

Skirting the point but maybe tangentially close, Fatboy Slim (as Norman Cook) *did* in fact play bass in a band called The Housemartins.

It didn't.  At least Cobain was an influential guitarist/frontman, even if I think the music press should have probably removed their mouths from his balls by now.

Yeah, that is a tad stupid.

Cobain at 4 :rollin
Ten years ago, Cobain made the top ten of most best guitarist lists, not just the Spin Magazine list.

Some of the inclusions on the list I thought were really cool though. Ali Farka Toure and Sonny Sharrock immediately stood out to me, for example.

Tough call. I consider Cobain the most damaging influence on music of the past 20 years. As awful as Skrillex is, I can't say the same for him.

^This.  From what I gather Cobain hated the spotlight, he was a mediocre guitarist, at best, and gave off a completely miserable vibe.  I'm not seeing what's influential about any of that.

I mean, regardless of whether you like the guy, lots of musicians were influenced by him, even if he wasn't the most innovative guy out there even in the grunge scene.  Just because we hate him doesn't mean he wasn't influential to other people.  But I don't think he was a great enough guitar player in the slightest to be included in a top ten list. :P

This list is nonsense just like pretty much every top whatever list by some dipshit magazine or whatever so, whatever.  But in Kurt Cobain's defense, Kurt and Nirvana are what led me to pick up a guitar and start listening to rock music, so thanks Kurt!  :tup

He was highly influential on his sub-genre at the time, but I think his influence has already largely faded off. IMO he will never have the lasting influence of people like Hendrix or EVH, and the other deserving guitar legends that are typically rightfully included in these kinds of lists. A lot of these guitarists are influential for changing the direction of rock music. I think of Cobain as a temporary detour.
Just my opinion. (And Cozmo's. I can safely call that one. :lol )

Stop stealing my argument, Blob. :P  I have said that for years.  Sure, Cobain was influential...he influenced a shit ton of crappy 90s grunge and alt rock bands, most of whom's music had the shelf life of a carton of milk.  Well done. :rollin :rollin

I am not denying it; I am just saying, most of the bands grunge influenced sucked swamp water.  It's like the guy who brags that he slept with tons of women, but all of them were slutty porkers...is that really anything to brag about? :P

Did hair metal really influence anything other than more hair metal (as opposed to other subgenres that can influence bands outside of their narrow sound)?  But at least hair metal was fun (when it was good, which admittedly was not that often). :metal
